We also have an internal medicine Dr. in the Rio Grande Valley. We have a cardiologist in both Missouri and the Rio Grande Valley. We see each one once a year unless the need arises to see more often. We spend more time in south Texas than Missouri but want to be covered on both ends. We have Medicare and Humana. It works for us.Re: Is nuevo progresso still safe?We go on a regular basis as do our friends. All is well. Enjoy.Re: Nuevo Progreso 2016-2017Thank you for the information Tom. That restaurant will be greatly missed. A couple of places we always enjoy for lunch are Jessica's pharmacy on the sw corner one block west when you first cross the bridge. I had a yummy lunch plate there for $4.00 last week. Good margaritas and entertainment. Another place we really enjoyed last season was directly south of Jessica's El Rancho. Good food and entertainment. I believe they originally had Ariba's by the school if memory serves me correctly. Ponchos in El Disco has a great bar and entertainment. Diego and Edith play there on Sunday afternoon. I haven't heard much about their food but it is a fun place. I saw they are also putting in an escalator to shop upstairs!!Re: RGV RV ParksThere are over 500 parks in the RGV so definitely something for everyone and every price range. We stay at Victoria Palmsin Donna Texas which is pretty much mid valley. So not too far from anything. We have a new Walmart less than a mile from our park. Don-Wes flea market adjoins our park. Dollar General very close. A nice little Border town Nuevo Progresso where we have all of our dental work done is maybe 5 miles. Lot's of good restaurants and fun shopping in Nuevo Progresso. There are all kinds of specials for first time visitors at Victoria Palms.. :W Tell them Ron & Shirley 2371 said to check them out. :) Wherever you end up enjoy your winter. ShirleyRe: $199 Monthly SpecialStormy Eyes yes you will get a choice of lots although the $199.00 special has brought in a lot of new people. If not offered ask for someone to take you by golf cart to see the available sites. The special has brought in a huge influx of new young retirees which is great to see. For those who are not familiar with Victoria Palms the daily activity schedule reads like a cruise ship. If anyone gets bored here it is your own fault. Someone mentioned tennis courts. We have those as well as new pickle ball courts. We have a new RC race track. Geocaching group. One of the most beautiful pools in the valley with frequent entertainment around the pool. We have an onsite restaurant. Something really unique is our Cactus Club which could be compared with the corner pub. It holds 100 plus people. It is open most Friday and Saturday nights with either a band for dancing or sometimes a meal or karaoke. We have all the usual activities such as cards, bingo, water aerobics, exercise classes dance lessons, line dance lessons, iPad classes, computer classes, wood working shop, beautiful sewing room, two dog exercise areas, a huge ballroom for dances and incredible entertainment, free cable tv with all the movie channels, plus so much more. If you are going to try out the other encore park specials and move from one park to another I would save this one for last. For those taking advantage of the $199.00 special I hope you enjoy your time here. ShirleyRe: Depressed snowbird housing market - YumaGood info Pawatt. I didn't realize the local study said 40,000 down from 10 years ago. We are also in the RGV. When we first wanted into the park we now stay in for 6 months it took 3 years to get a lot as they were so full. We have now been in this park for 10 years. Many, many vacant lots and many park models for sale. The majority for sale are Canadian which is understandable with the current exchange rate. Having said all of that we are now finally seeing people under 60 come in. Not necessarily all RV'ers. Some are renting to test the waters and some are buying park models. Our park has always catered to the more active or young at heart folks. We have a very active pool volleyball group and your grandma would not want to play with this group. Lol. They just added a sand volley ball court and a nice RC racetrack. It is great finally seeing some of the younger seniors being able to retire sooner. I think these are some of the reasons we are now seeing more younger people at our park. Our park is now offering $199.00 monthly rates for first time people. That should also stir up some interest. I agree with the other responses as to whether or not people are taking a loss when selling their places at a much lower price as when they bought. We are fulltimers and in order to start this lifestyle we sold our beautiful Lake front home for half what it had been appraised for a few years prior. That money was to be part of our retirement. Do we have any regrets? Absolutely not. We made no money on the sale of that home but the memories we have made since then are priceless. Prayers and best wishes to your parents on this new chapter in their lives and all of the challenges they will be facing.Re: Leaving TomorrowSafe travels and enjoy the journey!Re: Warning issued against Americans traveling to ProgressoJohn and Joey very good observations. I would like to further comment on your following comment "Progresso is not that way, which always made me wonder why that was. Vendors don't bludgeon you with requests to buy, children don't surround you relentlessly, and young men drinking on street corners don't stare at you with glassy eyes. Things in Progresso are very neighborly and respectful. Would be a real shame to see that disappear. " I also wonder why the merchants and people of Progesse are so incredibly honest and kind hearted? I learned this first hand last winter when I lost my camera in Nuevo Progresso and had no idea where I had left it. When I went back the next day retracing my steps I was assured at my first stop that if it was found in their town I would get it back. And I did!!!! At that point I gained a whole new respect for the people of Nuevo Progresso. ShirleyRe: Warning issued against Americans traveling to ProgressoHmm at this point I feel safer in Nuevo Progresso than in many parts of Missouri which is where I spend the summer. We each have to decide our comfort zone. ShirleyRe: RGV RumorsThe "Shootout" was not "in" Nuevo Progresso but outside of town. Nuevo Progresso was the nearest town so that was the location used. It actually started in another town and progressed on down the road so to speak. This is all according to news reports. Shirley
