You are welcome anytime. Don't forget to make a sign for your window stating "Roll Call Alaska 2018" and your names so we can spot you while on the road. We have met so many great roll callers last time on our way to Alaska and while there. It was so nice to finally put a face to the people we were talking to online for all these months. Janet Thanks Janet. We cruised there and stayed a couple extra days in Anchorage many years ago. Loved it. I'm so looking forward to returning. It's funny, we had a roll call on board too. Met a lot of interesting people and shared a lot of information. I'm usually a big planner for vacations, but going for 4 months seems daunting. I will probably just look for some highlights, then wing it. ??Re: Roll Call Alaska 2018We are late comers to the party. In Alaska, or on the way there?Re: Big rig friendly or Truck camper? Thanks for everyone's input. I really appreciate you taking the time respondBig rig friendly or Truck camper? We have a 39' fifth wheel that we fulltime in. My question is, would it be worth it to just store our fifth wheel and pick up a used truck camper for our Alaskan adventure? I'm concerned about the wear and tear on our rig and also being to get around and into areas, as well as the steep grades, etc. Anyone done this, or have wished they did? Thank you!Re: Do I have enough saved to go full time ?Very good point TOOBOLD. That is exactly why I wanted to ask this group of people because you have lived this lifestyle. I know if I ask financial advisors they will say no go, that I need to work longer. But I have seen too many people work till retirement and then have health problems and pass away before they can enjoy their retirement years.Re: Do I have enough saved to go full time ?westernrvparkowner Yes, I know the money will not go far, that is what has me concerned. However, my DH health is not that great, and his ancestors pass around 70 years of age. I just fear if we wait, it might be too late to enjoy those years together. The health ins is my major concern. I figure we will use about 130-150,000 of our IRA before my SS kicks in at 66. Leaving us with 450-500,000. I'll use our Roth $ that will be about 80,000 when we go fulltime just to pay for our insurance till we are 65, and can use Medicaid for insurance. Thoughts?Re: Do I have enough saved to go full time ? Aridon wrote: You can always collect the spousal benefit while you let yours grow. Does the spousal benefit mean that I as a spouse can collect a % of his SS, while he also collects his benefit? Then when I'm 66, I can then start collecting my full amount? That sounds pretty cool. Are there any special requirements that need to be met for this to work? Thanks for the info!Re: Do I have enough saved to go full time ? PapPappy wrote: My suggestion would be to use the money you have saved, to buy your RV now, rather than later. Then take a long vacation (how much time can you and DW take at any one time?), and get away for the whole time. Try and "live" the way you would want to when you do retire...don't go crazy with spending, but also don't be so frugal, that you don't enjoy yourselves. You will then have a fairly accurate account of what your monthly expenses will be, and you can figure out if you can make it with the money you have saved, or if you will need to supplement with additional income. Good Luck:) I have thought briefly about just taking a 2-3 month trip to try it out, more for DH, than me. But I think the Fifth wheel and tow vehicle we would buy for full-time would be very different than the one we would buy just for weekend getaways. A rig for full time would be much heavier, so that would dictate the truck would need to be able to pull it. Right now we have TT that we pull with a trailblazer, so we need to purchase both 5th and truck. (We have camped since we were kids)Re: Do I have enough saved to go full time ?Thanks for everyone's input. I think my big concern is having enough in retirement if I dip into the the 401k's to supplement DH SS for about 5 years while I wait till 66 to draw my SS. I know it's a gamble to wait not knowing what SS will become, but I also think if we use a good portion of our retirement savings, I will need the higher amount. I just don't know how much longer I can hold out ;)
