I towed a Jayco 321RSTS which had a GVW of 12,500 (we usually towed lighter but were probably close on a 3 month Alaska trip). Max tow rating for the Chevy was 12,300. It was the work truck model which meant more payload capacity that loaded models. It towed the Jayco very well. As others have said, when climbing you have to just let the 6.0 liter rev. Towed through MT & ID which has some long interstate climbs and all the way up the Alcan & Back the Cassiar with no problems. The Chev 6.0 handled it well.Re: What to use for GPSAnother user who just updated my Garmin 760 yesterday with Garmin Express and NO CHARGE. As someone said above, the Garmin works great for the main navigation. Co-Pilot will occasionally use Google Maps on phone to find local info or alternate route around construction or traffic issue.Bryce Canyon NP to the NortheastLooking for info, if we stay at Kodachrome Basin SP near Bryce; How is Hwy 12 thru Escalante to Torrey, then 24 to Hanksville and up to I70? Climbs? Narrow roads? Traveling in our 32' BayStar with Toad in October (would be keeping a close watch on weather :). . . Thanks for input.Re: Help me plan our trip - The DakotasMedora, ND is the community at the entrance of Theodore Roosevelt NP South Unit. 2 campgrounds, Medora Campground and Red Trail, both are basically ok. Lots of hiking trails in the National Park. There's also a north unit of the NP about 70 miles north of Medora. It's a bit more remote and less traveled than the south unit. Again, several hiking trails and variety of wildlife. There's lots to do in Medora but a don't miss is the Medora Musical. It's a professional musical variety show in a beautiful outdoor amphitheater. While it has a different theme every year, it is always patriotic and tells of Theodore Roosevelt's time in the Badlands. PS: The ND Badlands are more scenic and dynamic than the SD Badlands :)Re: Mirada Select SteeringSince the only dumb question is the one not asked; What is 'CHF'?Re: New 5er, fresh waterThere should be a setting in the valves that will let the onboard water pump suck water from a bucket (or jug) into the system for winterizing. There then may be another setting that will suck the water into the fresh water tank - that setting would be used to draw water mixed with bleach into the tank for a full sanitizing of the system. That setting can be used to replenish the tank from a bucket. I can't believe the tech you talked to in the original post didn't know how set the valves!Re: Help with hooking upPerhaps a little more explanation would help (as would a power jack): 1. Extend jack to raise tongue above the hitch ball. 2. Back tow vehicle to place hitch ball directly under the coupler on the tongue. 3. Retract jack to lower tongue onto the hitch ball - then lock the coupler. 4. Extend jack to raise the tongue enough to lock the WD arms in place. 5. Retract jack, finish connections (safety chains, electric, break-away brakes) You should not have to lift the tongue to put the coupler on the ball and by using the jack you need little or no force to properly connect the weight distribution arms. If you bought from a dealer they should have gladly showed you the whole process. If not, find a neighbor or acquaintance (or even a random camper) to show you how to use power to avoid having to use super strength.Re: Tow/haul modeAssuming the transmission and engine are working properly together, you can step on the brakes again to further slow down. It won't down-shift again into 1st until you're going slow enough to not exceed allowable rpm's.Re: Help with Long Term planning for AlaskaI would recommend going up to 3/4 ton. Then either use your current tt or get your 5th wheel long enough before going to Alaska to give it a thorough shakedown and fix all the minor defects and weak spots before you go. Then, dont be in a hurry. Slow down on frost heaves and construction zones and you'll be fine. Our trip in 2016 was with a 2500 HD gasser pulling a 36' 5er. Sometimes it would have been nice to have a bit smaller trailer but it was not a problem to find sites to park. It was a great trip, still looking at going back!Re: fifth wheel gas stopsI have often found stations with easier access near smaller towns or rural areas. The pumps are more often parallel to the storefront rather than angled toward the store. Also much easier than the exits near busy truck stops!
