I have been using the generic Camco in line model shown above. My first one lasted me about 9 months before clogging up. I do not drink the water from the faucet but we do clean dishes, shower and such with the faucet water. What are the potential issues with this if i'm not drinking the water. Is everyone here drinking the water from the faucet and is that the only reason for better filtering? FYI, I do drink filtered water at home with a good filter but just am too leary about drinking the unknown faucet water from some of the campgrounds we frequent even on a good water filter. Thanks.Re: Major short in generator wiring - PicturesThanks for the instructions. Here is another attempt at the photos! hope this works. Click For Full-Size Image. All of Google. Sign in with your Google Account :( Sorry they cant be seen by all. I would be happy to try to repost them. They are saved in my google photos. I hit the photo attachment button above the text box and pasted the link to the photos from my google account. In the size boxes i put 480 x 640. Any other instructions would be appreciated.Re: Major short in generator wiring - Pictures westend wrote: Again, there are better connectors than a wire nut. Follow the link in my previous post. Cause of the wire problem was probably a loosened connection and the high draw of the microwave. There can be a tremendous amount of heat generated when wires start arcing, trying to complete the circuit. Good luck. BTW, your pictures aren't viewable for me. Maybe you can fix that and make them smaller, i.e. 640 wide so we don't have to scroll the page. Thanks i will look into getting some of those connectors. I think i should just redo all the connections in that junction box. Sorry about the pictures, i had a tough time loading them. I edited the size so you may be able to see them now.Re: Major short in generator wiring - Pictures DrewE wrote: That other wire is the 12V lead to the generator from the battery. It is a quite heavy wire because the generator's starter requires a lot of current when its cranking--the starter on my Onan 4KY is somewhere around 90A or 100A in operation, roughly speaking. The wire needs to be thick partly to safely carry the current but mostly to minimize voltage drop when cranking. Genius! Thats it. Thank you for the explanation and to all for the replies.Re: Major short in generator wiring - PicturesThank for the replies. That connection is inside of a weather tight junction box and inside of one of the compartments. Like the others said i was just saying had it not been it would have been a fire. I'm not an electrician so bear with me with my description. The wires could be tinned copper. The main feed comes from my onan 4000 gen, then right into that junction box, and connects to a solid copper wire that runs straight to the transfer switch. All i did to reconnect it was wire nut and electrical tape it back together at this point. Although i did a much better job than was apparently done from the factory. i would like to improve the connection but i am not sure how that should be done. One thing that did confuse me was there is also another much heavier stranded copper wire that comes from the gen and it looks like it runs toward the battery compartment. i am not really sure though where it goes or its purpose. i can say the wire that burned up looks quite thin to handle all the power to run the entire coach. The only thing i could think it could be is the thinner wire activates the transfer switch which actually draws the power through the heavier wire. The issue with that theory is why did it burn up when the microwave was turned on. the flow through that wire should be constant if my theory make any sense. anyway like i said i'm not an electrician but i do like to understand how these thing work so when things do break, which seams to happen very frequently, i can fix them myself.Major short in generator wiring - PicturesHad a major short and near fire due to the wiring from my generator this past weekend. While on the road we had the gen running with the a/c going. The wife went to use the microwave and when she did everything shorted out. We have used all appliances while on generator power before with no issues. Upon arriving back home I traced back the problem to a junction box in a compartment just after the generator. I found evidence of a major short in the wires. It appear as though the wires may have come loose and separated slightly causing the short. One concern I have is the wires from the generator are some type of stranded aluminum wiring and the wires running from there to my transfer switch are solid copper. Could the dissimilar metals be an issue? Should I, Can I replace the wires coming from generator? Judging from the photos this could have been worse especially if the wires had not been inside of a junction box. Major short in generator wiring - PicturesThis topic has been moved to another forum. The larger windows on the front of my coach bow when driving at highway speed and have worked themselves loose once or twice. Not fully open but about a 1/4" or so. The noise from them is my main complaint. They are very noisy at highway speeds. My wife actually stripped out the cranking mechanism on one of them trying to stop it from rattling open. Also any window that has not been opened for a while tends to stick to the window gasket and get stuck. i have to pull the window open from the outside while someone cranks on the window to prevent the crank from stripping out again. The look of the windows are very nice but other than that i do not like them.Re: Calss C motorhome - On board ONAN generatorMy class c has a transfer switch and once when i was plugged in to shore power I started my gen. When I went to unplug from shore my transfer switch got stuck to shore power. I tried for a few day to get it unstuck and could not get it to switch back to gen power. Then all of sudden one day it worked. I heard that transfer switches can stuck sometimes but i don't know if me being plugged in to shore at the same time had anything to do with it sticking. I don't do it any more, since then i always unplug first. Better safe then sorry.
