I think the toughest test for this set up for us was a trip on CA 20 from Willits to Ft Bragg, if you have ever been on that road, you know it has its share of ups and down hills and twisty curves. For lights for my jeep I went with the "Hopkins" towing light wiring kit for towed vehicles. Works perfect no problems whats so ever. Its been working perfectly for the paast 3 years. 2006 f 350, 2002 Lance 1130, flat towing TJRe: Bed Mat BaseOn mine I have a bed mat (black rubber) and a sheet of 1 1/4 foam insulation board. Thats it. Light weight, never a problem with camper movement, and its inexpensive. I have had this set up for the past 3 years, if the insulation board compresses or anything else happens to it, I'll just get another one from Home Depot. 2006 F350 and a 2002 Lance 1130Re: Camper Tie-down Pros/ConsI hauled my 1997 Lance 165 on my f250 short bed for long time using the happy jack tie downs, with no problems at all. I felt safe using them. I know years ago lots of campers used the Brophies with out problems. I moved to the frame mounted type when I got my new to me camper. This camper is much heavier and i felt more comfortable with the frame mounted tie downs. The weight of the camper on your 1500, discussion is an important one. CAT makes weighing really easy with their app and you can weigh a second time for something like $3.00. Just knowing the weight was a bit plus for me. I will say adding bags, sway bars and all the other add ons, will help with handling, but no add on was a fix for being over weight.Re: Why shouldn't I go this route? (AC Roof Delete)Adamis, I have been looking into the "ecoflow" system for a variety of reasons. Google "Delta Pro" "EcoFlow" They produce a entire system that works well for RV life, including a A/C unit, Dual fuel generator, gasoline/propane and other devices. It is well worth a lookRe: TC and MPGI had a 1999 f250 short bed with a 1997 Lance squirelite 165s i got 14 mpg. I got solid 12 pulling a 2003 wildcat fbs26 with the same truck. You can look up the specs of the 1997 lance campers to compare with what ever you get for a truck camper. That same 1999 f 250 got 12mpg pulling a car trailer with a ranger pick up on it across the western US My guess is that your mileage will be very close to 12 to 13 with a bigger camper. The 165 is about the smallest lance camper they make, at least in 1997. I have a 2002 Lance 1130 with a '06 f 350 drw now and I dont even check the mileage, it is what it is. I hate to say it but with fuel $7.00 plus it is starting to make sence to drive the honda and stay at a motel, in some situations. I really have to want to be in the camper to spend the extra money.Re: Road tripping for used TCsIm in Northern Cal also, near Marysville, when I started looking I looked at dozens, drove from Livermore to Redding looking, most were Scrap. My first one, the guy saw me coming and afterward I could see where he pretty much led me away from the problem areas and, I had looked at so many i just wanted to get going. a BIG mistake. My second try went better I had to travel up by Placerville but found one that was in acceptable condition, NOT what I would say was great or even very good condition but I could work with the problems I could see. We have been happy with it and at the time I thought the price was high but turned out it was pretty much the going price and so It all turned out fine. I had looked at many many fleetwoods and EVERY one was in terrible condition, I never ran across, even one that was not just totally ruined by water.I finally just quit looking at Fleetwood. I ended up with a '02 lance 1130 and for the most part pretty happy with it. Wish it didnt weigh so much but it is "roomy" for a truck camper and a dry bath that the wife insisted upon.Re: Question for the Jeep expertsI have a Jeep Wrangler, so your GC is probably different, how ever U joints is what I would be looking at, over the years Ive had U joints squeak, squeal, click and a variety of other sounds. It would be a place to check. If any are discolored, as in showing some signs of rust,or are loose etc. The other suggestions seem logical, pinion bearing, might see if the seal is leaking.Re: Camper basically chopped in half by treeWell ... the moral of the story is to have each and every tree inspected by "Morgan tree service" and only Morgan tree serviceRe: Purchasing Warped Roof 1997 Bigfoot 2500 9’6”?Like I said before; "I would walk away from this one and continue the search, there are more out there and will be plenty more once we get back to what we think of as normal." I know I looked at what seemed like thousands of campers before finding the one I got, It will take some time and effort but you will find one that will be acceptable to you.Re: Purchasing Warped Roof 1997 Bigfoot 2500 9’6”?I would say the seller's asking price is at the upper end of the going rate, the camper is 25 years old, you have concerns/worries about possible water intrusion and its had a go with a hurricane. My opinion, if it were me, would be to pass. IF this was a "great"deal money wise, then maybe I would really consider it. I am only on my second truck camper, and learned the hard way on my first. It had water intrusion problems at the overhead vent and was almost impossible to tell from just looking, I wasn't as touchy feely as I should have been and I paid the price. I would walk away from this one and continue the search, there are more out there and will be plenty more once we get back to what we think of as normal.
