We camped 23 nights in June (5 different parks) and I only saw 7 protectors plugged into the power pedestal. These were all on large fifth wheel rvs. I talked with probably 1/2 of the owners and with the exception of the before mentioned 7 and motor coaches (which all had hard wired units) the owners didn't see the need for that kind of protection. So, 5 parks, 173 owners talked to, and only 7 with power protection that would take care of low voltage issue. Am I missing something on all the hype about needing this kind of power protection?Hardwired Surge Protector..Hard To Do?What's involved with installing a hardwired surge protector?Re: Chemicals for Black TankHappy Camper is the best stuff, easiest stuff I have found in 40 years. You can buy it from their web site 5starhappycamper.com. If there is a better product I am not aware of it.Re: Columbus? bad Keystone Montana Moutainer much better? We own a 2014 Columbus 365RL. The Columbus is the higher end fifth wheel from Palomino. The Sabre is the line just below the Columbus. Both are well built. I believe both the Columbus and the Sabre are better built than the Mountaineer. Nothing wrong with the Mountaineer just felt a few things on the Columbus were better. The Mountaineer is a lighter Montana. They have to cut corners to make it lighter.Re: Slide Canopy CoversOur fiver has 4 slides. I did not order it with toppers. After two trips last year having to climb on the roof and sweep off the 4 slides I purchased slide toppers. Best thing I ever added to a rv.Re: Towing Heavy 5er with SRW TruckX2 what ol Bombero-JC said.Re: Columbus 320RS vs. Silverback 33RLOur rving partners bought a 2013 Columbus 320RS last year. We liked the quality so much we bought a 2014 Columbus 365RL a few months later. Our final 2 choices were the Columbus we bought and a Keystone Montana. Our friends were trying to decide between the Columbus they bought and a Silverback. If you really check out the fit & finish (things like the inside of drawers, crown molding, etc) I think you will see why we both went with the Columbus.Re: Ford versus Dodge truck for towing 40 foot 5th wheelLots of good info being written about here. Some of you "assume" that I do not know what my GVWR, RAWR, tire max load rating, and actual weights of vehicle and fiver loaded and unloaded. I stated several times that I have had my truck & fiver weighed (several times) at a certified truck scales. On our last 2 week trip to the ocean my actual rear axle weight was 218lbs BELOW the max RAWR. This was with my fiver hooked up. I have not exceeded the GVWR, the RAWR, the FAWR, the fivers GVWR, or for that matter any of the trucks or fivers stated max weight requirements. I believe there is a margin of error built into all of these trucks max weight requirements and as long as you don't exceed them (which I have not) then you should be good to go. Just because someone does not list every actual weight does not mean they have not had the rigs weighed and know what the actual weights are. Bad assumption. Enjoy your tow vehicle (dually or not) and your coach. I know I enjoy mine.Re: Ford versus Dodge truck for towing 40 foot 5th wheelOld-Buscuit I don't understand what point you are trying to make. Are you saying that my fiver is too much for my tow vehicle? Let's see. My truck axle (3.55) is rated to pull a fifth wheel with a max weight of 15,300 pounds. My coach, fully loaded and certified scale weighed (last trip to the ocean) was 13,982 lbs. I am a good 1300lbs under the max fifth wheel requirement. My trucks certified scale weight was well under the loaded max weight requirement for the F350. So, what is your point? Do I need a dually? I don't think so. Am I being unsafe? I don't think so. Could something weird happen and cause me problems? Sure. But something weird could just as easily happen to a dually. I say get what you want and are most comfortable with, and be sure to stay within allowable specs.Re: Not sure I want the washer/dryer comboWe have that combo in our fiver. We do not full time either. We do spend a couple of weeks at the ocean each summer do between 12-15 weekend trips. I could not imagine being at the ocean with the washer/dryer. My wife uses it every time we are out as there are always wet towels to dry.
