You must make an accurate estimate of your trade-in and a fair estimate of the purchase price of the new unit. The difference in price should be your negotiating price. I don't care how much they give me for my trade-in. Many times the trade-in value is exaggerated to make the buyer think they are getting a good deal. But then the purchase price of the new unit is also increased. All I really care about is how much money I must pay difference to get the new unit. To use this method, you must be reasonable about the value of your trade-in and also accurately calculate what the new unit could be purchased outright without a trade-in. Many times people over estimate the true value of their trade-in. This is the critical part in negotiating the price you are willing to pay. Another important thing to remember no matter what you are buying, do not let the sales person have any ideal how much you really want to purchase the item. If they think you are in love with the item, they will not give you the lowest price. If I like the deal, I buy; if not I tell them "no hard feelings" and I walk. I wish you the best. RayRe: bike rack platform styleI have one I purchased about 10 years ago. It was sold under the name of Coleman. Took 2 bikes to Alaska and back without any problems. The only drawback is the rack will only hold 2 bikes which is fine for just the wife and me.Re: poor customer serviceDon't you just love it when the owner lowers themselves to swearing at the customer. Really unprofessional, rude and not the way to make a business successful. I too have experienced being sworn at; needless to say I would not give that company my business. RayRe: Converter abbreviations questionMy radio had a way to dim the display lighting. I don't remember how to do it, but the radio's owner's manual described the procedure. Not sure the light would draw enough current to warrant concern. RayRe: Can I add a wall thermostat? If you had a wiring diagram showing how the unit's temperature is currently controlled, then I or someone else may be able to answer your question. There has to be an internal thermostat controlling the temperature. My guess is yes you can change how the unit is controlled. You would have to purchase a 12-volt DC thermostat. (I have a 30 footer now) Take your time and enjoy the trip. With 4 months that should be easy. Scorp. X2 Went in 2006 with 30 foot 5th wheel and 4x4 pickup truck. Tallied 10,500 mile by the time we arrive back home after being on the road for 3 months. If you really want to 'see Alaska', an RV is the only way to go in my opinion. I was 62 at the time. Go, relax and enjoy the trip of a lifetime. Wishing you the best. RayRe: Our inspection or the Dealers? One last point. Do NOT pay any monies or sign any papers until all the problems identified by YOUR inspector are corrected. You will have very little leverage once you sign papers or make a down payment. RayRe: Water Fill Concern - How To If No Pressure??? Nuke-E wrote: If you're going to try to fill with gravity through the city water inlet, you're also going to have to generate enough pressure to force the check valve open (often right at the inlet) Exactly my thoughts. I do not think gravity pressure will open the check valve no matter how high the water container is elevated about the water inlet connection. RayRe: Good experiencesA few years ago we where camping in a motor home in Rocky Mountain National park. On an adjacent site was a young Canadian, just married couple. They were just hiking and camping. They did not even have an ice chest. My wife and I invited them to join us for supper the second evening. Reluctantly, they accepted our invitation. Because they were so many years younger than us, I am not sure they knew what to expect being invited by total strangers. My wife fixed a very nice meal. They both insisted on washing the dishes after we finished eating. We sent them back to their campsite that evening with about a dozen home-baked cookies. Before we left the next morning they paid us a visit to thank us for our hospitality. They were an exceptionally nice young couple. RayRe: Revenge?I like the chain saw idea. Too bad you didn't have a noisy, contractor type generator also. I never realized how good I could feel in the morning until i gave up drinking alcohol 30 years ago. If you can handle it okay; I never mastered drinking moderately. Ray
