We have driven three times from Maryland to Alaska, but have never driven straight through without stopping for a day of rest here and there along the way. We usually spend two nights in Whitehorse as it is a good place to stock up on food and take care of any issues with car/truck/motorhome. Also if you are driving the Alaska Highway there are places along there where you will want to take time to stop. We have taken 9 weeks twice to do the trip and 12 weeks once. Our 9 week trip this year did include Oregon and Washington, but we also did not go to several places in Alaska that we have already visited several times. Taking only 30-40 days to travel to and from Virginia to Alaska is really making for long driving days and very little sight-seeing. We spent almost 4 weeks just in Alaska this time and spent no time in Fairbanks or Anchorage, just overnight stops. With only that little time, you might do better to fly to Anchorage and rent a motorhome and spent the whole time in Alaska. I hate to fly and love to drive. Plus, I really wanted to see Canada through the windshield. Thank you for the advice, we may be able to stretch it to 45 days, but that would be it. I get an estimate of 77 hours from my home town to homer, but that is just my navigation app or the internet. Unfortunately, I've got to get back to work. If I have three capable drivers, would you say that shooting to get to AK in 9-10 days is within the realm of possibly or unrealistic bordering on impossible? Do you want to see anything along the way or just blast thru?? Ever going again?? You never know. Better to add several days and see the sights.Re: Coffe pot for boondockingLots of ways to skin the cat---woops-make the coffee.Re: USFS campground fees? rjxj wrote: Maybe it means the Michigan "Passport" which is $11.00 for the season. Passport is required in addition to any camp fees. More money Yes, but MIs passport is just once for the season not a daily fee, Secondly this OP was regarding NATIONAL FS campgrounds. I just use the Sr passport and pay half the posted fee or is the "Golden Eagle" for everyone? Just read other posts and many commented about MI fee. Colorado has some very nice campgrounds and price then well for Sr citizens--RESIDENTS-Sun or Mon thru Thurs --1/2 price- or was 4 yrs ago. How about the commercials that want 12-15 bucks for electricity?? My slide in aint no motor home w/ dual 50 amp ACs on the roof. I don't hang several sets of Christmas lights to use all the power. Once in Dodge City the site had an electric meter. ALMOST one KW was my use...Re: Are you REALLY that inconsiderate??Horrah for us-to hexx with you. It is becoming the national motto. Just drive down the interstate or in my 25 mph posted sub.Re: Transfer of Federal Lands to the States mikensallyt wrote: jmtandem wrote: For example, the State of Nevada has sold almost of of the state land it was granted at statehood. Most eastern states have sold most of their original federal land. The land in Nevada is about 87 percent federally owned. The state owns very little. The legislature is looking at this issue now and it has proponents and detractors. Part of the bigger issue is how the federal government is treating users of the land especially ranchers. Making a bad comment here (me). Isn't Nevada Harry Reid's area/state? Just saying. And you can put the pieces together. Drive across ND and MT now. We own about 80% of but there are barb wire fences for hunderds of miles-both sides of highway... Three yrs ago was in WY and was told-"after xx section every other section is public land. Camp anywhere." Barb wire for the next 30++ miles-both sides. Ended up at WM-Casper.Re: I thought it was over darsben wrote: I understand the product was bad but is that the sellers fault? The analogy is when a product from CW turns out to be defective do you blame CW or the manufacturer? The answer is the manufacturer. Of course you return it to the seller and he handles it for you as a courtesy but your beef is with the manufacturer. I think your blame misplaced. Seller deserves a rating based on the sellers performance not the performance of the product you bought. That is why the seller wants a great review from you first so you do not bash the seller unnecessarily and inappropriately. But once the seller knows the product is junk they get to take the 'heat'.Re: Bicycles-recommendations?I was going to suggest that a bike shop would let you 'try it out' and WM wont. The bike shop will also adj. Many bikers need to jack up the seat several inches. Your leg should be nearly straight when on the down side. Seats on some bikes hurt. Might want to change out. Bike shop should work w/ you on that. Make sure you get some kind of flashing rear light even for DAY riding.Re: America’s Wildflowers, On the Road in a Truck Camper Pt 2Beautiful--thanks to all esp OP. We took some flower pics on honey moon-45 yrs ago. Film camera, of course. While in Glacier the film got to 36, 38. 39 exposures and I began to worry. Took it to a camera shop in next big city. Fellow told me not to worry, just put some film in the camera...yuk.Re: M+S or Winter tires required in western U.S.?Along w/ what bka posted just above-- ....carrying chains... doubling back to buy chains??? Ever think to try and install the chains? When chains are needed there is more to it than having them somewhere in a storage compartment.. Otherwise park it till the snow melts. M/S tires are not much good in either-mud or snow. The days of good snow tires are gone.Re: Nissan Pathfinder, Pathetic suspension shown againPassed a fellow w/ a vehicle like that last eve. I thought he had his high beams on. I don't understand how drivers can throw a trailer on a vehicle without some extra support.. If you must get your headlights adjusted.
