All ActivityMost RecentMost LikesSolutionsRe: Top brands for qualityI don't plan to winter in upstate NY. I grew up on the shore of Lake Ontario, so I'm familiar with the amount of snow and cold that area experiences. I've spoken with people who spend the summer months up there, in 5th wheels and travel trailers, but go somewhere warmer (Arizona) in the winter. They winterize the rigs, cover them, and come back in late spring. They do have someone check on the rig occasionally during the winter.Re: Top brands for qualityThanks a lot for your input. I'd like to stay below $50K for a later model used unit. I'd like to stay in the 2-4 year old range. I have thought about park models, but they don't seem to have the space that a fiver, with 3-4 slides may have. I may also change my mind and upgrade my truck so I can drag the thing abound. If the trailer is idle for 6-7 months a year, I plan to put a cover on it, so I'm not too concerned about the rubber roof. When I was lurking on the motor home forum a couple of years ago, most of the folks seemed to think Newmar, Tiffen and Winnebago offered the best quality overall, unless you got into the Prevost style models. That's the kind of info I'm looking for about fifth wheels. Again, thanks for your input and I'm still looking for advise. To me, it's a big purchase, and I want some background going in.Top brands for qualityWe are considering purchasing a used (2-5 years old) fifth wheel to use as a "summer place" to get out of the Arizona heat. The trailer would be parked in a campground in north central New York state, and would probably stay there year round, since I don't want to upgrade my truck so I can pull it back and fourth every year. After doing some reading on this forum, I am under the impression that a lot of you aren't impressed with the quality of most of the rigs on the market today. That being said, I'm interested in your opinion of the "best" three or four brands and models on the market today. Thanks in advance for your thoughtful input.Re: 2WD vs 4WD tow vehicleThanks, folks. Lot of good advise. At this point, I don't plan on boondocking, but also never thought about wet grass in camp grounds, etc. Also, in the winter we would retreat to AZ, so snow wouldn't be an issue. You've given me lots to think about.2WD vs 4WD tow vehicleDW and I are considering purchasing a fifth wheel and a tow vehicle. The trailer would be in the 30-33 ft range. The theoretical tow vehicle would be a fairly new (less than four model years old) F-350, diesel, crew cab, short box, single rear wheel. My question is; is there any advantage to towing with a 2 wheel drive truck, as opposed to towing with a 4 wheel drive truck? We would most likely use the rig as a way to escape the summer heat here in AZ, and would most likely travel and see more of this great country. For the past several summers, we have driven between 7,000 and 10,000 miles each summer, sightseeing in the family sedan. Thanks for your consideration.Re: Motorhome hit in storage lotLooks like most of that is just paint surface rub. Buy a bottle of "cleaner wax" at the parts store. I know Meguires make it and maybe others too. A little elbow grease and most of that should come off.Re: Will it ever endSome of us in Arizona say the same thing when it is still 100 degrees the middle of October!Re: Repairing a hole in the front capYa done good!Re: Wet BoltsPlease pardon my ignorance, but what is a "wet bolt"? I don't own a fiver.Re: Put away dirtyLove it! Having grown up about 70 miles east of Rochester, in Oswego, It brings back way to many memories. Now I live in Phoenix, AZ and don't worry about winter.
