Saves a lot of blood pressure pills. alRe: US-101 in Oregon CLOSED at MP 48This morning's report says one lane closed, flagger, expect 20-min delays. At least we'll be able to see it. We went through a similar weather situation in Fla a few years ago. Fortunately, nothing opened up under us. alUS-101 in Oregon CLOSED at MP 48News reports say both lanes due to a sinkhole. Tripcheck says there's a detour in place, expect delays. Not a lot of roads in that little town of Wheeler, so don't know what the detour is like or where it goes. We're heading that way tomorrow. Won't be boring, that's for sure. alRe: how to avoid the grapevineWe go south on US-101, then head east on CA-126 (east of Ventura) to I-5. South on I-5 to I-210 (just a few miles) then I-210 to CA-57, south on 57 to I-10 and east as far as you want. Lots of traffic on I-210 and I-10 and what seems like perpetual construction, so pick your times of day. alRe: Verizon "Unlimited" Plan ExperiencesWe didn't switch to the "Unlimited" - we have a 50gb Verizon wireless plan and would have liked to save the money, but it just wouldn't work for us. First - the 22gb is spread across all devices on the plan. Once you hit that 22gb limit, all devices are subject to "reprioritsation" - you'll still get 4g, but you'll be kept at the bottom of the list of folks who can get onto a congested tower. That would have been livable. The killer is that EACH DEVICE (phone, mifi) is limited to just 10gb before being dropped to much lower speeds for the rest of the month. We actually had our primary internet switched to that lower speed for a few minutes to test it. It was unusable. (Can't remember if it was 3g or 2g, but I think 2g.) And there are NO mifi-type devices that are exempt from those rules. As we fulltime and Verizon is our only internet most of the time, the restrictions are impossible for us. Maybe next time the competition forces a plan change, things will change. I'm not holding my breath. All that said, we don't have any experience with actual use of the plan. Just that one test. alRe: Thousand TrailsWe fulltime and get a lot of value from 1000 Trails. Big thing is they have parks in places we want to be. Last year, we spent 247 days in TT parks. So far this year, we've used or are reserved at 165 days. If it matters where you go and if you need to be there, make the reservations. It doesn't cost anything and you can always change them. We have an "Elite" membership - 120day reservation window at most parks, stay up to 21 days, no time out. Our dues are frozen at $555 a year (or about $1.52 a day). We've noticed a BIG change in RV park access the last two years - lots more RVs on the road, not any more RV sites being built. Right now, we're at 1000 Trails Palm Springs, and the place is 2/3 empty - but the temps are also around 100 degrees. We'll move to cooler this week. :) alRe: coiling methods for 30 amp cord and fresh water hosesWe're big fans of the Coil 'n' Wrap gizmos - cheap and simple and very easy to use. We use them on the water hoses, power cords and even the air hose for the compressor. We found that cheap water hoses get stiffer sooner on cold days, but that the good ones (we favor those from the Water Filter Store) are much more flexible in the cold. And best of all, we try to stay away from those cold places. alRe: Does your driver's license match your vehicle registration?Your mail handing company ought to be able to point you in the right direction, but generally speaking, having a SD drivers license is one of the ways you prove your domicile state. We use America's Mailbox, and they are very knowledgeable. alRe: Best RV GPSGarmin RV760LMT hands down. alRe: Weighing your rvThe Escapees club has a couple of 4-wheel weigh stations at some of their parks, and has a traveling unit that goes to many of their rallies. What we've done is find a scale that's not too busy and flat to the ground. First drive thru and get a total rig weight and individual axle weights, then drive thru again, offset enough that only the wheels on one side get weighed. A little math will then give you the individual wheel weights. al
