Howdy Towbo, We all started out somewhere, as one who has gone from why less then what you now have to the other extreme and I do mean extreme when it comes to tow vehicles and trailers, its not what you have but how much you ENJOY using it. Welcome to the forum. DaveRe: Finished my new tow vehicle, it works very well. rjstractor wrote: Mr. Cob wrote: blofgren wrote: That's a great looking truck; I love the older Pete's too. What engine and transmission does it have? The engine is a 6NZ C-15 550 horse power with 1850 lb pounds of torque, the transmission is an Eaton-Fuller 18 speed Auto-Shift, 3.55 axle ratio. It has what it needs to get the job done and then some, darn thing is going to get me into serious trouble one of these days with the law as I run up the mountain.:B Dave You say you like to row the gears and you got an Auto-Shift? I'm just yanking your chain a little, sounds like a great choice. I have some time in a 10 speed AutoShift and I'm amazed by the little tricks it employs to complete shifts that I wouldn't dare try in a full manual. I do like having control, the Auto-Shift allows control when you want it and allows you to just kick back and let the Elves work when your feeling lazy the best of both worlds. The 18 speed has been a real pleasure to drive in the mountains so much better then the 10 speed that is in my Freightliner. We left the mountains of Colorado yesterday and are now cruising the flat lands of the midwest BORING but it is what it is. From what you wrote, I am assuming your one ton will stop 30,000 pounds as quickly and as controllable as an HDT. Must be some sort of special edition one ton. I am NOT giving you a hard time but braking ability and safety is one of the main reason that folks who use an HDT to tow large RV trailers do so. I had a 14,000 pound toy hauler push my 8,000 pound one ton through an intersection when attempting a panic stop, I don't even want to think about how bad the wreak would have been had I been towing 30,000 pounds that day. This thread is not about yours or my truck, and I'm certain the OP could care less. Thread drift, it happens. DaveRe: Finished my new tow vehicle, it works very well. Being able to climb and descend mountains quickly, and safely is the major reason for building such a rig. I have been towing with an HDT for the last five years the ONLY regret I have is not doing it much sooner, the money I spend buying and then modifying a new Dodge one ton years ago would have been much better spent on a used HDT. When in a panic stop the 14,000 pound trailer pushed the 8,000 pound Dodge through an intersection when some ahole ran a red light was enough to convince me to get a truck suited to the job. Everyone's wants and needs are different, it would be a pretty boring place to live if we all liked-drove the same thing. Dave We are right down the road from you at Lake Connor Park, in Lake Stevens. I wanted a Volvo but DW would not go for it. Chris I have a very good Freightliner for sale, stop by and check it out, you won't be disappointed. DaveRe: Finished my new tow vehicle, it works very well. Just curious if you would divulge an approximate cost for the truck and then an approximate cost for upgrades? I have around $40,000.00 in the truck that includes the purchase price, repairs, everything that was done to convert it to a motor home and carry the Smart Car, behind the sleeper. I've driven several 425 Cats with 13 speed Eaton-Fullers and loved them so I can only imagine how much fun your truck is. Have you crunched any fuel economy numbers yet? There is some electronics but not much, NO EGR crud, the 6NZ was the last of the good big Cat's. On the last trip I got 7.7mpg but I wasn't really trying for mileage I was having to much FUN climbing mountains.
