What DrewE suggests is probably a wonderful route for the most part, I must take exception to one leg. Between 6:30 -9:00 am and 3:00- 6:30 pm, you would be traveling faster on a unicycle towing a circus train, than towing your rig on I-290 through Worcester. Please, for the sake of your sanity, continue on I-90 to I-495. I hated the table that came with our teardrop camper, and like you, I was at a loss as to a workable solution. I had a sudden epiphany, I didn’t really need a “table “. Since there was only the two of us, we really didn’t need a big table. I purchased a folding aluminum table , about 2 1/2’square, that we could use in the trailer and outside the trailer. I purchased enough hardwood to cover the gap between the benches to solve the bed situation. The eight inch wide boards could stack under a bench or in a closet. Amazing how much larger the camper felt until I stood up. A 6’4” body in a trailer with about 5’6” headroom was an easily solved conundrum. We traveled three times cross country (9000 miles each trip) and numerous trips to Florida, Smoky Mountains, Maritime Provinces,and many,many local trips of only a few hundred miles with our Siamese cat Pogo. The first trip was in a B+ motor home while most of the others were in a truck camper. He always had access to food, water and his litter box. He spent the majority of his time sleeping. Occasionally I would see him sitting and looking out the back door or a side window. He never caused any damage nor was he ever any trouble. He would scream like mad when being carried to or from the camper,before and after trips, but never showed any interest in being outside. He was very mellow. His replacement, after eighteen years, is a Siamese named Tonto. We haven’t attempted traveling yet, due to Covid, but it should be interesting. Where Pogo was mellow,Tonto is anything but mellow. Pogo was a floor or lap cat. Tonto is a lap, off the wall, highest accessible point cat. He is very calm all night while we are sleeping but makes up for it the other sixteen hours. We have a truck camper mounted on a 2016 F250 Supercab. We carry our two Blix Vika folding electric bikes behind our front seats along with our Honda generator. We are fortunate in that we can fit the bikes folded or unfolded along with the batteries, chargers and helmets and still have room for drinks and snacks. Everything that we formerly carried in that space now travels in an aluminum box mounted to our front hitch. We never leave anything more valuable than a picnic table cloth outside when we are away or sleeping. The electric bikes are a fabulous way to sightsee in state and National parks as well as beach communities as well as to run errands.600Views0likes0CommentsRe: Truck Campers and Boating?
I find that launching my Seaway 18 Sportsman CC a whole lot easier when I have my camper on the truck if I use my front hitch. There is no question as to where the boat is heading when it’s right in front of your face. I have a roller trailer, so when the back of the boat is in the water, I unhook it from the trailer and roll the truck until my tires hit the water, brake to stop and the boat pops right in the water. Backwards,no issues...frontwards, extreme anxiety. I always have the terror that I’m going to hit the gas instead of the brake. I have never done that trip, though I wish I had been able. If your luck is even vaguely like my luck, you have just succeeded in jinxing yourself. If you cover the window, nothing will happen. If you don’t cover it,well, you can see where I’m going. I’ve had fiberglass boats for nearly fifty years. After much trial and many errors, I’ve pretty much perfected my techniques. If I’m making pretty to sell, I strip it with wax remover and carefully apply several coats of floor wax in long horizontal passes being careful to have minimal overlapping. Do it correctly and carefully, and it looks like new and lasts several years. I’ve had multiple boats at the same time because they come out looking too good to sell. Surprisingly, I am still on the same wife...though she could do with a buffing. For my keeper boat (also known as my third, last boat), I use Collinite polishing compound and Colinite carnuba boat wax. I also use this wax on my F250 and my GTI. I have a 2016 F250 ,6.2 gas with the camper, plow, and tow packages, Super Cab with a 6’7”box . I carry a Northstar Freedom (approximately the same weight) and I have the overload springs and lower Stabiloads. Additionally, I have Timbrens in place of my stock axel stops. This combination allows me to load the camper and not have to realign my headlights. It also has ended any sway and rocking issues. We have about 35000 miles loaded with this combination and have enjoyed most of them. There were a few off-road miles that we survived, but I wished I had been elsewhere, (although I did perfect my close eyed driving technique). If you are going to permanently mount your camper and use it off road, you might want to consider removing your jacks.163Views0likes0CommentsRe: can’t decide camp in boat or another van or F250 TC
I have a 2016 F250 ,6.2 gas and carry a Northstar Freedom while pulling an 18’ Seaway Sportsman CC. The truck is equipped with the camper,towing and plow packages, Timbrens, Stabiloads and overload springs. I launch with either my front or rear hitch. I have towed from Florida to Maine with no issues,mechanically, but severe psychological damage caused by idiots driving around and into me. With my front cargo box, camper overhang, hitch extension, boat/trailer and kick-up long leg motor, we are somewhere around 50’ long. Needless to say, I bypass cities whenever possible. The camper is far superior to any boat I have ever had for on road napping, and eating... not to mention bathroom breaks. Climbing an eight foot ladder to access the ladder to climb into a cockpit of a 27’ Seaward sailboat to unlock a cabin to get to the head in the rain, with a full bladder was always a fun challenge. I discovered,quite by chance, that hitch balls can also come loose when least expected. I was hitching my Seaway 18’ Sportsman CC to my truck when I just happened to notice what I thought was a movement in my ball. Upon closer,heart stopping inspection, I discovered that I could unbolt the ball bare handed. I removed that ball and replaced it with a new ball with a nylon lined lock bolt secured with a heavy cotter pin. I now check my hitch AND ball before every use. This is the first incident of this kind I’ve ever encountered in over fifty (closer to 60 than I care to admit) years of towing boats,campers and cargo trailers. While receiving a visit from a trailer hitch could prove painful, I would have to assume that 3-4000 pounds of boat,motor and trailer popping through a windshield would be devastating.235Views0likes0Comments
