Re: Steep Off-Road Grade with Truck CamperBack about 5 years ago I went up Fish Creek hill on the Apache Trail I think it is about a 19 percent grade and rough and washboarded. No problem but I was worried about my home made tiedowns. Next time I went on it I went down the hill:) That section has since been closed due to a flood and is blocked with Huge boulders. Hope they can eventually reopen it as it was a Great scenic drive...Re: Cold Ambient Temps = Higher Alternator Voltage? sch911 wrote: Grid Heaters cycling on and off. NORMAL! Yup, and the Grid Heater draws around 100 amps. Enough to even dim the headlights :ERe: Cold Ambient Temps = Higher Alternator Voltage? The Dodge Cummins engine has Grid Heaters in the intake for cold weather starting. This will cause the voltage to drop after starting in cold weather. The heater will cycle on and off until the intake manifold reaches 60 degrees or you go over about 7 MPH. I think that's what you are seeing.Re: FlatCouple years ago I was going up to the UP with my 95 Dodge Dually and a tandem trailer loaded and went through a sealcoating operation and picked a couple screws in the outside dual. Didn't know anything was wrong until I stopped for fuel and smelled Hot Rubber. Just took the factory jack from under the seat, Jacked it up and changed the tire. Threw the old tire on the trailer and went the rest of the way. Factory jack picked up the truck, Camper and tongue weight just Fine.Re: Best area to boondock in Quartzsite for two nightsTwo of us stayed at Roadrunner on Thurday and Friday. Plenty of room. No facilaties but rock fire rings. No charge for up to 14 nights. Every type of RV there and lots of side by sides but some dust. A little generator noise from the class A's but not bad.Re: Truck Camper style Camping outside ScottsDaleI prefer Tonto NF campgrounds. $10 to 12.50 a night with a Geezer pass. The 12.50 ones have showers. You can also find some free spots around Roosevelt Lake. There is also a NF campground at Tortilla Flat on highway 88 West of Apache Junction. But these are a considerable distance from Scottsdale 30 miles plus. Probably my favorite in Cholla NF campground on Roosevelt lake. The only thing you hear there at night in Coyotes. If you're really brave you can do the Apache Trail with a truck camper :) Google Fish Creek Hill on Youtube. There's Burnt Corral campground on Apache Lake on the Apache trail with Spectacular scenery. But it's Gravel road (One lane in some places with Turnouts) to get there. I stayed at Burro Creek on 93 for one night last winter. OK place but the only thing that works there is T Mobile.Re: Camp sitesNew Mexico state parks, water and electric 14 bucks. That's what they were last winter anyway. Also Nat Forest and national parks half price with a Geezer pass.Re: Anyone know Duluth and Lake Superior Southern Shore? There is municipal campground on the north end of Washburn WI 27 Bucks a night with electric. A township campground at Little Sand Bay North of Red Cliff and my favorite Wanoka Lake National forest campground 7 miles East of Iron River WI. Only a mile from US 2 and 7.50 a night with a Geezer pass, Good Verizon service there. There is Birch Grove NF campground a few miles west of Washburn but No Cell service there.Re: Flat tire on SW Truck while carrying a TC?On my way up to an engine show in the UP last summer I went through a bunch of sealcoating, I think they got the material from an old Junk Yard. I picked up a three sheet metal screws in the back duals, didn't notice a thing until I stopped for fuel and smelled warm rubber. I just took the stock furnished jack out jacked up the back and changed the outside dual. The trailer I was pulling was about 3,000 and had a 5,000 pound engine on it. I could have taken some tongue weight off with the trailer jack but it wasn't needed. I suppose the camper goes about 2500 + loaded.
