I would edit out the Mobile Suite and replace it with my Jayco if I knew how.Re: Short bed with no slider hitchI have long (8') bed with a HiJack slider...........daaahhh The previous owner installed it for some reason or another. I cut the slider rails off so it did not take up so much room. I tried to trade or sell it to a short bed guy but had no takers. I bought the truck used 1 1/2 years with 4k miles on it. It was parked for 14 months of that time.Re: Pentastar v6 Turbo is comingMy 2013 Chrysler 300 has the Penstar V-6 and 8 speed tranny. On the freeways at steady 75-80 mph it gets 33 mpg. That is hand calculated on over ten tanks of gas. Think of how much more it would get if turboed and injected. I love that car. My 2005 300c hemi gets 13-20 mpg.Re: Recommended 5th Wheel to live in full time in AlaskaMary, My son has a 35' 5th.whl. on his lot in Homer, Alaska. Several weeks ago he received a letter from the city of Homer to move his trailer out of the city limits. At least 200 others got the same letter. You may want to check into that before planning on a RV in Homer. His 5th.whl. is two slides, about 12 yrs old and kind of used from 3 kids and two dogs. Not one I would want to live in for 5 yrs. Homer does not get 5' of snow at one time. It gets 5' over the entire winter. Their climate is relatively mild all winter. A lot of rain during the winter. Propane is expensive in Homer. approx. $5/gal. It works just fine there in the winter. Don't believe all of those tales from Florida folks. I live 40 miles north of Homer on the ocean. Good luck in your move to Alaska. You will like it after getting settled.Re: Getting ready to buy 5th wheel for full time livingsoos has it correct. We purchased a new 2004 Mobile Suite in 2004. We absolutely did not want a rear kitchen or did we want to have to open the slides to eat or potty. THe MS was such a nice and well made unit that we bought it even though we had to open the slide to get at the side kitchen. As it turned out it was never a problem. We towed that trailer for 10 yrs all over the US, Mexico twice and the Alaska Hyw. Never a problem with the kitchen and we opened it 300 times at least. The potty was accessible w/o opening any slides. THat is most important. You eat usually once a day but the other function is many more times. Our MS stood up well to the rigors of long term living as well as lots of traveling. I would definitely buy another MS but we have decided to try out more permanent RVing in a destination RV. We now have a Jayco Bungalow 40FER and love it. Much more reasonable price and much more room in it than a 5th.whl. THere are other brands of destination RV's but we liked the one we bought the best of all. I will change my signature pic when I figuire out how to do it.Re: LED marker, tail & stop lightsMy last 5th.whl., 2004 Mobile Suite came with all outside LED lights. They work great. One problem..........if you tow in snow the snow will build up covering the lights and as they are not warm to melt off the snow they can not be seen. Just FYI. Happy camping.Re: Entering Canada with prior misdemeanor adjudication witihhelTraveling on the Alaska ferry from Bellingham to Haines will have you driving back into Canada on your way to Haines Jct. and then back into the USA(Alaska) at the Yukon/Alaska border.Re: Sold our 5th wheelSamsphones, We also sold out last 5th whl., the 9th one in our list. I feel like I lost my best friend but mostly the traveling life style. We traveled a lot over the years, 6 trips from Alaska to Mexico, twice around the US, approx. 30 Alaska Hyw trips with a 5th whl. Wore out 3 pick-ups. That is all gone for us. We did purchase a Jayco 40' FER Bungalow which is a destination travel trailer. It is a park it and stay rig. We parked it in Casa Grande, Az. It is a great place to live in but not for running all over the place on a regular basis. Maybe in time the 5th.whl. thing will go away but I doubt it. Good luck with your new life style. I will change my sign. picture when I figure out how. Jack in AlaskaAlaska Hyw.-2014Just returned to Alaska from Az. The highway is in real good condition except for frost heaving (about 50 mile area) north of Destruction Bay an south of the Ak. border. No Cassiar this trip. The traffic was extremely light. Many times 30 to 45 min. between meeting other vehicles. This results in a very poor year for lodge owners. They need all the business you can give them or they will be closed next time. Think how many pieces of pie they need to sell to pay for the days generator fuel. Jct.37 Fuel----closed...again CONTACT CREEK LODGE--very nice owner, fuel cheaper than Watson Lake. RANCHERIA----good food, nice people, good fuel prices. LIARD HOT SPRINGS----owner needed a good lesson in customer relations. I would avoid them. FAST GAS has a discount card. Stations all along the way. We saw $1.63 CDN/liter highest for diesel. Also a room at Rocky Mtn. Lodge was beautiful and $180/night. Others $120 to $150. We have made 78 trips over the highway in 50 yrs. This was the most pleasant one and may be our last according to my co-pilot. Makes me sad. Drive slowly in the rough spots and have a safe trip. We saw 30' Rockwood travel trailer break off of a 20' box van truck on a frost heave, skidded down the road and ran over the bank into a creek. Very minimal damage to the trailer. That was unbelievable. The commercially made hitch on the truck broke completely off. Very poor weld job. Check ALL of your equipment with a close eye every stop. The road can be rough on poor equipment.Re: Electric FireplacesI thought they were silly when I 1st saw one. My current rig came with one and my mind is changed 180 degr. It actually is an electric heater made to look like a fireplace but it puts out good heat, has good control ability and provides a little bit of ambiance. Glad I have one and would put one in again.
