Did you hear that Navistar International and Mack are going to merge? The new truck will be called a Corn-Dog. What Do A Freightliner & A Test-Tube Baby Have In Common? They Are Not Peterbilt But most truck jokes can not be posted.Re: 5th wheel recommendationsPodie: Great to hear your getting a 5er. Like several have posted here, you do not want too much trailer for your truck. A 12.000# trailer will have a little over a ton of pin weight. You need to look a the tire max ratings and the rear axle limits in addition to max gross combination weight. For your 3/4 ton truck you will want to keep the trailer weight down below those numbers no matter what the dealer or other posters tell you. It will pull it and maybe won't blow your tires out but the brakes may not be enough to stop you in the distance needed. Just my 2 cents. Dave & Jenney You can never have too much truck---> :)Re: How much is too much?P66: I agree with FTGuy about weight of 5er and size of toter. A fifth wheel trailer should have 20% of it's weight on the pin, for a 12.000# unit that is a little over a ton. You should check the tire rating max and the rear axle max in addition to the gross vehicle rating. Sounds like a nice heavy truck that is much better than some I see on the road pulling large heavy trailers. Good luck on the northbound trip, we have wanted to do that too. One state at a time I guess. ps: braking is not a problem till you really need it, ya got to have the brakes you need. Dave & JenneyRe: Quartzsite solar towerJust to put it in perspective, your new 1000 watt generator will only cost you $3,700.00 but the fuel is free and it will work in the daytime if it's not cloudy. :)Re: Quartzsite solar towerA earlier post states this generator will offload the grid by a terawatt / year, I am trying to do the math and have become confused. There are 8,760 hours in a year times 100 MW is 876,000 MWH. The other thing that might come into play is that if the sun does not shine 24 / 7, but instead produces useable heat more like 8 to 10 hours each day, we will give it 10 to make it easy, we get 3,650 hours times 100 MW becomes 365,000 MWH which is a third of a Tera-Watt-Hour if conditions are perfect. I might have missed that fuzzy math class the only day I skipped school. 8-) BTW Electricity Consumption Totaled Nearly 3,856 Billion Kilowatthours (kWh) in 2011, which is 3,856 Tera-Watt-Hours and this unit will contribute 0.000095% to the grid. If we build 1,000 of these we will have 1% of our needs at the fire sale price of only $1 trillion. I pray I am not picking at nits or have misplaced a decimal.Re: Actual federal weight law rules, some questions and answersNow this is a long lived and delightful thread. As I can finally see through my glazed eyes, I come to the common sense understanding that: 1: Do not put more that 20K# on an axle without a permit. 2: Do not exceed the equipment's safe capacity. (tires, suspension, etc) 3: Do not violate bridge and roadbed loading rules where you are driving 4: Work hard to pass the attitude test short of giving up your rights to be left alone if following the above. 5: Tell me more about how many college kids can fit into a VW bug.GVCW I am working real hard to not exceed my equipment's limits, I know what they are. If I don't fail the above, might I still have trouble? :)Re: Your Rig avvidclif1 wrote: slownse wrote: I belive the ride will be a littel rough unles you remove 6 off thouse tiers on TV Not hardly, air ride suspension, air ride cab, and air ride seat. Better than any PU or 1T. Thanks all, yes everything air ride, one note, don't forget the air ride hitch from ET hitch , there is really none better. :C ps: these trucks are built to spend 8-10 hours / day driving, the object is to make the driver very comfortable so he/she can do it again. A plus is all the room for my dashboard toys. ---> Re: Your Rig Thanks for the great forum, Here is a move up for longer trips like to quartzite this Jan, if we can ever get-er-done.
