We use an iphone5 on Verizon as a hot spot. (I know it doesn't work everywhere) but it is the best we have found, especially if 4G is available.

I would go south on I-5 to CA-58 to 395 south to I-10 east to I-20 in Texas and on to Austin. PM me if you need detailed Info.

I have ipad3 with cellular on Verizon. The cellular is turned off because I use my iphone5 as a hotspot on Verizon. GPS works fine on mine.
