I went to Univ. of Maine in Orono (just north of Bangor) back in the 60's and we made a few day trips to Acadia using routes 1a and 3 to get there. Our current route from NJ is to get off I95 onto I295 at Portland and then take route 1 from Brunswick up to Ellsworth. No tolls on 295 or 1. Route 1 is slower than the interstate but the scenery is much better. We usually make an overnight at Camden Hills State Park. If you stop there take the toad to the top of Mt Battie for fantastic views of Penobscot Bay and the town of Camden and the harbor there. Enjoy your trip!Re: Bar Harbor Me to AlabamaIf you are OK with using 2-lane roads, our preferred route to and from Bar Harbor is route 1 south from Ellsworth to I295 which joins I95 just past Portland. Route 1 goes through a number of scenic small towns and is a slower but shorter route than I95. You didn't mention it, but I495 joins I90 (the Mass Turnpike) for a number of miles before I84 starts at Sturbridge. I84 ends at I81 at Scranton, PA, but I81 heads south from there. Your route looks good to me.Re: Gilette, WY to Idaho FallsNew Jersey is pretty flat too. The route I described doesn't have any "serious" mountain driving. No switchbacks or steep drop offs on the side of the road. You may want to use a lower gear for engine braking in a few places going down for Togwotee Pass to save the brakes. It's a beautiful drive and at this time of year there may still be a lot of snow in the trees near the top of the pass. The Teton mountains will be on the right driving from Moran to Jackson. Grand Teton National Park is our favorite place!Re: Gilette, WY to Idaho FallsI used Google Maps to create the route that I would take from Gilette to Idaho Falls. Take routes 50, 387 and 259 south from Gilette to join with I25 north of Casper. I have not driven these three roads, but Google street view shows them as good 2 lane roads. You could also use I80 west from Gilette to Buffalo and then I25 south to Casper, but that adds about 50 miles to the trip. From Casper, take route 26 west to Riverton and continue on 26 to Moran Junction. From Riverton route 26 makes a gradual easy climb to Togwotee Pass followed by a slightly steeper descent to Moran. From Moran take route 191/89 south to Jackson and continue south through the Snake River canyon to Alpine. I do not recommend taking route 22 west from Jackson to Victor due to 10% grades. From Alpine take route 26 to Idaho Falls. With the exception of the three roads south from Gilette, we have used this route several times in the RV in my signature. Enjoy! From Idaho Falls to Salt Lake City is all I15. No experience with a route from Salt Lake City to Denver.Re: Hwy 2 in NebraskaLast time we used route 2 from I29 to Lincoln was May, 2016. It's a divided highway all the way, 2 lanes each side. If you are interested, the Nebraska Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center is the first left after crossing the Missouri river bridge into Nebraska. We did an overnight at Victorian Acres RV Park on the right about 1/2 mile past the bridge. Enjoy your trip!Re: Yellowstone closed roads? We used route 120 from Thermopolis to Cody and then on North. 120 becomes 72 at the MT border then joins 310 and 212 up to I90 at Laurel. All good 2 lane road. No mountain driving or grades.Re: Norcold N611 AC circuitLink for Norcold service manual below. See page 37 for location of AC heater element. http://bryantrv.com/docs2/docs/ncoldnnewnseries.pdfRe: OT -- Oregon TrailWe have visited a number of Oregon Trail sites in Nebraska and Wyoming. The link that enblethen posted is a good reference for planning. We always get off I80 a Ogalalla, NE and take route 26 all the way to I25 in WY. Windlass Hill where the wagons were lowered down the bluff is on the left and the first site we pass. There is a short paved path to the top of the bluff with good views of the eroded slope where the wagons were lowered. The Ash Hollow visitor center is on the right a few miles further and the Ash Hollow Cemetery is a bit further on the left. Along route 26 you pass Courthouse and Jailhouse rocks in the distance then Chimney Rock. There is a nice Museum at Chimney Rock. Scott's Bluff is a bit further on. Shortly after entering Wyoming is Fort Laramie, IMO a must stop. Several of the original buildings have been restored or reconstructed and a nice visitor center. A very interesting place. The absolute best place to see wagon ruts is in Guernsey, WY. The ruts are cut into sandstone and in one place are 3-4 feet deep. There is a paved loop path, but it pays to walk in the ruts to find more ruts not visible from the path. About 2-3 miles away is Register Cliff with emigrant names carved into the cliff face. After Casper, WY we take route 220 and 287 to Lander. There is a parking area at Independence Rock. The emigrants carved their names into the sides and top of the huge granite rock. Good views of the surrounding area from the top of the rock. Devils Gate is visible in the distance. Before Lander route 28 goes southwest over South Pass. You can use Google Maps to see pictures of each of these sites that others have taken. Just search Maps for each name. Use satellite view to see each site and the surroundings.Re: House Batteries not being charged by engine. We have a 2003 Minnie. The relay that connects the chassis battery and alternator to the house batteries is the silver cylindrical one in your picture. Winnebago calls it the "Battery Mode Solenoid". I have replaced ours three times since we bought the MH new. After the third failure I bought this heavy duty contactor. No more issues. The yellow wire gets 12V when the ignition switch is on. With the engine running you should get 12V or higher at that terminal and chassis battery/alternator voltage at one of the heavy wire terminals. The other heavy wire terminal connects to the house batteries. If the solenoid is working properly the voltage should be the same on both sides. If no voltage at the yellow wire terminal when the ignition is on then some wire tracing is in order.Re: Two questions: fridge OOPS! and battery boost relayGo to this link at Winnebago. https://www.winnebago.com/owners/owner-resources/guides-and-diagrams Scroll down to Wiring Diagrams then select your year and Itasca model. Find the diagram that shows the "Battery Mode Solenoid", which is what Winnebago calls the solenoid that connects the House and Chassis batteries when the ignition switch is on.
