We rented a C for a two week trip to see how it went. Took a very early retirement two years later and then bought a 8 year old 33' gaser with no slides. No problems except a little small for us for longer trips. Traded for a 2 year old 36' DP with two slides. Some problems but service policy handled most. Coach started getting smaller with longer trips. Traded for a 5 month old 40' DP with four slides. Completed two, two month long trips last year. After 15 years still love the travel. Best of luck with your search. Just remember to relax and enjoy the ride.Re: Extended warrantiesWe had Xtraride warranty on our last two DPs. In both cases, we received more in repair costs than we spent for the warranty. With that said, after the warranty expired on our current coach, we went it alone. The cost to continue was just too high in my mind for what was now a five year old coach. It turns out, most of the expensive repairs, so far, were made under the warranty. Our costs since then have been very reasonable.Re: What ladder do you keep in motorhomeWe have the 7.5' STIK folding ladder from CW. Folds into 4" square by 7.5 feet. Kept in storage bay for years and never used. Had an awning problem and needed it at a rest area on Sunday when we couldn't get road service. Glad we had it.Re: Carpet replacementWhen we wanted the carpet replaced in our Scepter, we checked with the local repair facility that serviced the coach. They recommended the installer they used. Coach is forty feet with four slides. Tile in living room, kitchen and bath, so carpet in bedroom and two front slides. Installer also sent us to his recommended carpet retailer. We bought the carpet for $200 and installer picked it up. Installation was another $700 and took two days. That was four years ago and it still looks new. Check with local RV dealers and repair facilities to see who they recommend.Re: Unoccupied Home and Homeowners InsuranceWhen we purchased our vacation home we indicated that was what it was, a vacation home. Nothing special from the insurance company, premium less than half our regular home. We used it two to three weeks a year usually at holidays. Storm caused a roof leak, insurance paid $6,000 in repairs, no questions asked.Re: Gas or DPWe purchased our DP ten years ago, when it was new. In the past ten years, we've made numerous mods and have had some repairs. We go to RV shows every couple of years to checkout the new coaches. Just as ten years ago, we could afford a new unit, but at just ten years old, our coach is reliable, comfortable and known. No reason to look at replacing just because it's ten years old. Not sure if this answers your question or not, but I certainly wouldn't dismiss a DP I liked because it was ten years old.Re: Towable vehicles 4 downWhen we replaced our Saturn toad, we went with the Ford Flex. Seats seven, easy setup for four down and great everyday driver as well. Used FMCA tow guide to look at alternatives before deciding on Flex.Re: Newbie driverWhen we transitioned from our gas to DP, we had already been driving a class A for more than a year. With the DP, we enrolled in an RV driving school for a two day class at a CG near our home. The folks were very cooperative in coming to us for the class and it was a great class. Well worth the cost. We also hired them for an afternoon several years later to develop a method for us to park our new coach in a tight storage garage. A great investment for the new driver.Re: Opinions on a 2008 HR Scepter 42 PDQWe have a 2007 Scepter 40 PDQ. Had it for ten years now with no thoughts of replacing it. Can't find any reason to. Love the coach, the layout and the ride.Re: class A camping off 140 to yosemiteYou can stay at the Mariposa Fairgrounds RV park in Mariposa. Either trike in from there or YARTS stops downtown and there are plenty of shops in town.
