Currently towing a Jayco 228 ultra lite, 4875 Lbs loaded including water. We drove from Edmonton Alberta through the Canadian Rockies including going both directions on the Cocquihalla highway in British Columbia (8% grade on one stretch for several kilometers). Total mileage for that trip was just over 3300 kilometers. We have myself, The wife and our three kids. With our bikes in the box we were 300 Lbs over the GVWR and 900 Lbs short of the GCWR. For the trip the truck towed the trailer effortlessly. Other that a couple of stretches on the higher grades the truck drove in 5th gear at 2100 RPM. On higher grades the truck would drop to 4th and sometimes into 3rd but they were short stretches and maybe for around 20 minutes. We did have one stretch where we left Kamloops BC, the outside temp was 39 degrees Celcius and the transmission was getting hot so I had to drop down to 80 Kms for a bit to allow it to cool (it was about 6% grade for that stretch of highway). Once it cooled off I ramped it back up to 100 Kms and continued on. For our size of trailer the 5.0 is an excellent motor. We are looking at upgrading the trailer in the next bit to something longer and with a slide. I am estimating the trailer to be around 7500 Lbs once loaded with gear and water. I am very apprehensive about being able to tow with the 5.0. First due to it overloading the truck and second due to lack of power to tow that large of trailer. We will have to replace the truck to upgrade the trailer but I will not be getting another 5.0 with better payload. I am either going to mover over to the Ecoboost with the max tow package or we will upgrade to an F-250 with a 6.2 (do not need nor want a diesel). From what I have heard from others who own a F-150 5.0 and have read, this motor is excellent for towing but the limit is around 6500 Lbs. Anything over and you will want to look at something bigger. As well for a daily driver I really enjoy the truck. It averages 16 mpg and has plenty of power when unloaded. That's my two cents. RyanRe: Biggest Bunk HouseWe are in the same boat and looking for a large bunk house trailer. We are currently looking at the 36QBOK right now. We like the room and accept the fact there will be places and campgrounds that we might not be able to get into due to its length. We are also considering the Gateway 3650BH which is a five slide bunk house as well. We will be looking at both during the winter rv show in February. RyanRe: Fifth wheels - Sundance, Jayco, Columbus, Big Horn, DenaliYou should check out the Forest River owners group if you are looking at the Columbus line. My DW and I are eyeing up a new trailer (currently looking at the Sabres) and I have been reading the Palomino forum for the last two months. Palomino is also the manufacturer of the Columbus line. There have been a couple of complaints on build quality. I'm not saying all of the Columbus is bad quality but make sure you do your homework before jumping in with any of them.Re: Explorer Base V6 FWD - Anybody tow with this?Hi, I have a 2011 Ford Explorer SLT, but the AWD which has the same specs as the FWD. I am towing a 2012 Jayco 228 25' holiday trailer that weighs about 4300 lbs fully loaded (no water though). It tows ok on flat roads and in some hilly areas but you would not want to sustain a long climb on a steep grade for too long. We are a couple of hours from the Canadian Rockies and we have made a couple of treks into the national parks but I would not want to go much further. Our explorer also has the tow package which gives it a tow rating of 5000 lbs and a 10,250 GCVW. Without the tow package (brake controller, class III hitch, tranny cooler and a larger radiator) your towing capacity drops to around 2000 lbs (I think). My trailer is is slightly too much for the explorer even though we are within the tow capacity and just under the GCVW. At 100 kms an hour we are averaging 10 mpg. RyanRe: Looking for a particular TT (easy ? ;) )The Jayco baja series has the toy hauler platform on the front and a pop up tent trailer on the back. The last one I saw was made for some serious off roading with the raised body and checker plate rock protector panels around the bottom. The trailer fully loaded (but without water) is 4400 lbs and a 425 lbs tongue weight. There is myself, the wife and our three kids in the vehicle. My GCWR is almost maxed out (max 10,250 and I'm at 10,050). It goes nicely on the flats and some hilly areas but I would not feel comfortable towing through the Rockies mountains with it.
