Barstow to Kingman
We will be traveling From Barstow, CA towards Kingman, AZ and I see a few options. I-40 is the most direct, but is it the best option? My main concern is trying to avoid Las Vegas and the steepest roads.

40 stays well south of Las Vegas.
There are scarcely any hills or grades between Kingman and Barstow.
Fuel in Needles is super expensive (tourist prices). You can either leave the interstate and go across the river to Fort Mohave, AZ, or stay on 40 and get fuel at the 95/I40 junction.
