Richard, here's a thought as to why the dog may have "turned" on the baby. My Shih Tzu Cookie (12 years) has never growled or shown any aggressive behavior towards any person, other dogs or even a cat until a grand daughter of my sister in law was snapped at by Cookie about 10 years ago. The little girl (3 years old) kept pulling at Cookies ears and finally Cookie had enough and bit her on the hand. We taught the little one that you do not pull on a dog's ears, her and Cookie had no more problems and got along just fine after that.
