When we had Bailey put to sleep, Neal was not with us. Neal was handicapped and Bailey was his rock. Neal was inconsolable. He looked everywhere for Bailey. Since we fulltime and move periodically he would look in all the new places. He got sick and we were sure we were going to lose him. This went on for six months. Finally we got his gut back in order and he started to heal, but he was never the same and died a year and a half later, partially I'm convinced due to grief.
When Butterscotch died almost two years ago, we took Duchess with us. They had been together since Duchess was born. She sat on the table with Butterscotch. She had known she was sick and was often curled up next to her ailing sister who was dying of TCC, bladder cancer. The vet first gave Butterscotch a sedative and Duchess kept her muzzle right next to her friend's. Once BS had died, she remained there for a few minutes, then turned to us and wanted down. . . she was ready to go.
I am convinced she knew BS was gone. She may not have known where, but she did not look for her as Neal had done with Bailey. She was all alone and quiet, but if she grieved, it was not all encompassing.
I do believe they understand that death is final.
