I have a dilemma regarding the upcoming Sevierville trip. Our old Jack Russell Murphy is mostly deaf and I am guessing about 80 percent blind. You can see the cloudy cataracts in her eyes. The only time she can hear anything is if you clap or whistle. She will then tilt her head. She still sees good enough to get around, but she is starting to misjudge jumping up on our deck sometimes and will bump into things occasionally. She is still full of life and energy though. I wish I could harness some of her energy!
My concern is taking her on this trip. The last several weekend trips we have taken, she has started barking and "chirping" when we leave her in the motorhome. I have a Furbo camera that I leave in the motorhome and I connect it to our Verizon MiFi device. I can then log into the camera from our phones and see and hear what the dogs are up to. The last couple of trips, Murphy has started barking and chirping after we have been gone about an hour. Murphy has this high pitched chirp noise that she makes when she wants our attention. On our weekend trips, we usually don't leave the motorhome for too long and now that we have the camera, if she starts making noise we come back to the motorhome. The Furbo camera has a "bark alert" that will alert you if your dog is barking.
On the Sevierville trip, we will be leaving the motorhome for several hours on some days. After the rally, we are heading to Cherokee, NC for 5 nights. My neighbor has a house in Franklin, NC where he spends his summers and we want to visit him while we are up there. Franklin is about 30 minutes from where we are staying in the motorhome. I don't want to be a bad RV neighbor and have Murphy barking when we are gone. I also don't want to be a bad dog dad and have her upset when we leave. Murphy never likes being alone and I think now that she is nearly deaf and can't see well, she gets stressed when we leave the motorhome.
Normally in a case like this, I would just have my niece stay at the house and watch her. But my niece is coming with us on this trip. Murphy absolutely LOVES her grandma (my mom) and my mom has offered to watch Murphy while we are gone. But my mom fell and broke her back last year and she is still in some discomfort. I don't want to put any additional burdens on my mom but she loves Murphy. My wife Donna wants us to take Murphy as Murphy always gets excited on our trips. Plus, I'd love for everyone to meet Murphy. She is really a sweetie. My other 3 dogs are fine being left alone. They just sleep.
Anyway, sorry for rambling on but I need to make a decision on what to do with Murphy. I still have time to figure it out. Maybe I can get something from the vet that will calm her down for some time when we are gone from the motorhome.
