I got a phone call Tuesday from a family who had not seen their father in twenty years to tell me he had passed away. His body lay in a morgue for over a month before he was identified and the family was called. What a shame for this to happen to a man I once knew as a friend. I will conduct his funeral tomorrow at grave side and try to help mend some broken and angry hearts. It's not only animals who become strays it also happens in human families as well.
Old Fella has taught me a lot about the homeless of this earth and it is not limited to the four legged creatures either. Here was a man who had it all at one time and died separated from his family and friends as a John Doe. I often wonder about the animals in shelters that are euthanized and thrown away in a trash bag and burned. It's as if they never got to know a warm and tender touch, a soft voice to sooth the pain and calm the fears. Once visiting the shelter There was this poor little dog just shivering and scared to death. I open the kennel door, pick him up in my arms and brought him home. The transformation I saw in the next few days make my heart ache for all of those poor scared little dogs that never got a chance to receive that kind of love.
Old Fella has made a difference in my life and I will never look at at a stray the same way ever again. Tomorrow I will say farewell to a man that died alone and perhaps afraid, maybe I can make a difference tomorrow and for all of the tomorrows I have left.
