Wow - I leave town for a few weeks and all heck breaks loose! Richard, doesn't sound like that dog was trying to harm you - from what you described, sounds like it was protecting itself the only way it knew how. A dog intent on harming gives warning signs - that one didn't. Rabies are unlikely, but the shots are a good precaution.
