If he is weary of you, he would not appreciate you taking him from his "home" no matter how poor that home is. As long as he is welcome at the campground, I would let him stay in familiar surroundings. I WOULD, however, leave my name & phone number with the campground owner along with enough money to provide food on a regular basis. I would also try to bring him to a local vet or, if he was more comfortable with the campground owner, ask him to bring him to the vet and send me the bill.
I'd be afraid that aking him home with me would be more for my comfort than his.
