**** Oregon Route *****

Traveling with 36 ft. fifth wheel on rt. 39 in Oregon. We need to get over to 5 at some point. ending up in Salem. Being new at this, I see a couple of ways. someone suggested to come across 66 ,another 140. My question is, to avoid high eleavations, which way would you guys go. We are retired and are in no rush. Thanks
  • 140 is better. 66 is an older route that tends to follow ridge tops, with a lot more curves.

An alternative is to continue north on US97, and take something like OR58 across.
  • DO NOT TAKE HWY 66 bad for RVs, I would take 97 to 58 as I5 has construction north of Grants Pass. Hwy. 58 to I5 is a good road and a nice drive.
  • I agree with above. Hwy 58 has lots of turn offs, passing lanes, etc, and isn't used as much. We use it all the time to get to Salem. MUCH easier than 22. Shoot, why am I telling anyone this??? Now 58 will get crowded!!!! And we did 66 in our 36 ft DP and it scared the bejeebers out of me........NOT a good route.
  • Why not go to Bend on Hwy 97 and then take Hwy 126 into Eugene on I-5 and then shoot up to Salem? It's a beautiful drive and the Bend area is neat to explore. We've done it many times with our 40' motorhome. Have a good trip!
  • If not already past it see crater lake,,, If you are coming across 58, spend a night or two at Caseys RV park west of Oakridge, Nice.

Wouldn't OR 22 be a more direct drive from Bent to Salem?
  • Just an FYI about going on Hwy from Bend to Salem. If you go that way during the rodeo (this weekend) or during the big Sisters Quilt show (2nd weekend of July) you'll be in for a bucket load of traffic. I've known people to wait TWO hours to go from Bend to Sisters during the quilt show. I avoid that route as much as possible.

It's a mad house during that time, I would go 58
