2 Weeks in Utah in October

Hi all,

Planning a 2 week (give or take) trip through Utah this October. Coming from Idaho so plan to come in on the I84. Would like to travel down and exit Utah at St George and carry on to Fire Valley NP.
We visited Zion, Bryce, Canyonlands, Moab etc a few years ago so am looking for ideas on what to see and do on our way South. We enjoy the outdoors, hiking etc and prefer to stay off the Interstates as much as possible.
Thinking UT89, being a scenic route, but not sure what to see along the way (obviously it would be rude not to visit Bryce & Zion on the way through).
We are travelling in a 25' Class C with a small toad. Prefer staying in State Parks or similar. Don't need full hook ups or luxuries.
Thanks for any and all ideas.

  • Thanks everyone for the suggestions.

Busskipper, that is a great journey but time may be against us. We did visit many of those places back in 2008 when we travelled for 6 months.
Can't quite pull that one of again unfortunately.

I will add Kodachrome to the list though.

    Thanks again.
  • IMHO avoid any highway designated SCENIC unless in a car.
Get Mountain Directory West to help in your route planning.
You could cheat and to to Adventure Caravans website to see where they go on their Great Western Parks tour which takes the entire month of September starting in St. George.
  • Also consider Kodachrome, near Bryce -- very quiet, a little warmer (because it is lower), lots to do.

First off - Sounds Great, IMHO a great time to travel.

I'll suggest places and a route that might not work if just going from A to B is the mission, but if seeing sites and adding to your experiences is what you are after, this might work. If not this trip maybe for the future.

Starting at I-84 and I86 intersection in Idaho Going to Valley of Fire State Park, Nevada.

    Map

First I took you to Flaming Gorge NRA - This is Similar to the Lake Mead near Las Vegas and Valley of Fire SP.

Next to Dinosaur National Monument, Just interesting to see Dinosaurs in the Rocks and a great little CG on the Green River.

Just a short drive to Colorado National Monument, just outside Grand Junction Colorado, resupply and not quiet in the Mountains of COlorado. (Mountains are an Option if you could do this in the end of September this is the REWARD.)

Out of Colorado to Utah on I-70 exit 214 to RT 128 along the Colorado River to Moab. (Option is to revisit Arches and Canyonlands).

Then South to Monument Valley, passing Mexican Hat, and seeing where so many American Western Movies were shot.

Now over to Page and Lake Powell, Neat CG that looks East over the Lake, just beautiful.

From Page to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, in October if no snow will still be open. (With a little SNOW it would be Unforgettable)

Then over to I-15 in Utah - if needed you could jump up to see Zion again - As you cut across Arizona on I-15 the drive next to the Virgin River is, IMHO, Special a deserves a stop or two, along the highway, to view/photograph.

Mesquite is always interesting - in the middle of nowhere - then on to the Destination - Valley of Fire SP.

Hope this is of some help - I've done this trip, and have recommended it with rave reviews before, if the trip is not for you at least it will give you some options of things to see and do in the future.

    Best of Luck,
  • You might consider Monument Valley. Also there is the Grand Canyon.
