We lived in Atlanta for years, and I got a big laugh out of this post also.

To the original poster, it really is not all that bad. You've received some good advice.

Hello to Ivylog & Klueck! We are close by also! Off of Gumlog over in Towns County.

We have driven straight thru ATL several times. We find any time from 1000am to 200pm is ok to hit I75 thru downtown. And as noted earlier, pick your lane - not all the way to the right as they do magically turn in to exit only lanes and keep her steady as she goes.

If we find we are going to hit ATL during rush hour - or if the traffic reports are bad, we take I-285 around.

I am guessing that y'all take 76 down to I575 to hit I75? We have yet to take our rig across Blood Mtn or any of the other local hairpin covered hills. Although we have driven to Alaska & back twice!

Safe travels for whenever you leave. Maybe we'll run in to y'all in the RV section at WalMart!

Well, we made it through Atlanta. The worst part was before the 285 cutoff when we were surrounded by semi's. You are right, we took 76 to I575 and then onto I75.

We aren't even fond of driving Blood Mountain in our truck...no way for the motor home.

We're in Florida for the winter, so I guess we'll have to see each other at Walmart next summer! :)

Wonder would anyone pay to have their RV driven through Atlanta for them. It may be a bear, but thousands go through every day - you are just a little longer and a little heavier
Just pay attention and don't keep changing lanes. You will be fine, but all bets are off on a Friday PM or when it is raining.

All depends on time of day, also where you are traveling, and what elements you want to deal with!

Some say to stay away from By-Pass, because Commercial Semi Trucks, have to use by-pass, and there will be a fair amount of big trucks (may or may not bother you).

Rush hours: By-Pass is also grid-lock, so it does not save time.

If you are traveling South into ATL via I-85 heading to I-75 south, taking 2- by-pass (285) down to I-675, down to I-75 south, is definitely a better option, many times than straight through down-town.

Sometimes down-town is stopped, due to Baseball games, events at the dome, etc.... Then by-pass is better.

Some think By-pass confuses the trip, then straight through

I have driven thru Atlanta many times and I agree find your lane and stay in it. They will buzz around you just like most other large cities. Avoid the rush hours as they are more crowded. Last time I drove though in Sep. I was doing ok until up ahead there was that two semi accident and we sat for an extra hour. That was in the middle of the day. the unexpected happens. I have also went through town in the middle of the night and that is by far the best time. Good luck and don't be timid if you have to change lanes.

The rain for Saturday has been pushed back to Sunday so you can stay a couple days longer.

When we go thru large towns, we also try to avoid the "lunch rush". Lots of workers try to run errands on their lunch hour. We have found that 1-2pm has been a good time. Back from lunch but not out of work yet.
