395 north

Ive been to yellowstone 20+ times over the last 40 years.always took I15 from so. Cal. Im gettin tired of the same old route. Anybody try 395 to ID. Then over to ID. Falls? Is it worth the difference in miles? How are the roads north of Tahoe?
  • 395 to Reno, 80 east to Winnemucca, 95 north to the 55, east to the 84 by Boise and on to Idaho Falls. If you want to dodge Reno and Carson Valley, take the 6 out of Bishop, and pick up the 95 out by Tonopaugh, then north thru Hawthorne, Nv and on to Fallon, Nv, then north from there to the 80, east to Winnemucca.

Ahhh.. I'm a little confused by your statement/question. 395 doesn't hit Idaho until way north of "going over to ID Falls". Are you thinking of taking 395 to Oregon's Hwy 20 and then over to Idaho?

In any case, north of Reno, 395 is mostly high desert and not all that attractive and IMO, quite boring. However, 395 on the easter Sierra's is indeed probably in the top 10 of beautiful drives.

  • OldRoadDog, if you have never taken 395, you really have to do it, even if there are a few extra miles involved. And maybe budget some time for stopping in the Eastern Sierra. World-class hiking and camping.
  • I'd have to rate 395 as one of the top ten roads in the country. And the road surface is in amazingly good condition for California.
  • Yes, 395 all the way from LA north is a beautiful drive. One big hill but excellent road.
  • At Nevada border of 395 now.....great drive in and around Mammoth, lots of snow but road's clear. Weather here has been cool evening's some rain and nice day time temp's. Headed to Tahoe from here. Have a safe trip... will also be in Yellowstone in August/Sept.
