Typically, it is other drivers that make it dangerous
Umm, you do know that YOU are "other drivers" to me? - RichertExplorerJust drove through Atlanta on I 75 and Orlando on I 4, they are way more scary than the roads on this list!!!
- tenbearExplorerI haven't read all the posts, but each year a few semis get stuck in Smugglers Notch in Vermont. Apparently, many truckers use their GPS to plan their trips and some of the trucker's GPS don't mention the dangers of taking a large vehicle thru Smugglers Notch. They even ignore the big signs posted on the approaches to the Notch warning of the danger.
If you have a large RV, Smugglers Notch is a place to avoid. - dsenderExplorerInteresting.... we've driven the I-10 toward Phoenix from CA MANY times in both car and RV. Never thought of this as dangerous. Boring yes, but at least the speed limits are high. And we also drove Montana Hwy 2. A bit boring also but a VERY easy drive as a way to travel and miss the mountain passes. We did stay at one motel/campground and I commented to the person checking me in that it was interesting that the two were combined. She looked at me funny and said she thought they were all like that. Apparently, she never got out of that small town.

#3 in that list is completely wrong!! Highway 2 is several miles north of Butte MT and Three Forks!! Both of these are on Interstate 90.
So how accurate are the rest of that list??
Trying to scare us??
Kind of like the Mt Directory a scare book. Must have been written by someone who never been on a Mt road - hotpepperkidExplorer

Well, our experience of many, many drives on 550 is that no one crossed the line. Guess we're lucky.
Yea me to not ever the ashphalt haulers one year - LaurenExplorerWe will be Ouray for a week in mid Sept so should hit Red Mtn Pass just great for my photo work - love Fall colors. But God decides when He does what where and I accept that.
We will have the one ton Chebby long bed (4WD) and have not been to (Hooray for) Ouray with something this large. And not so good with one lane rocky shelf roads anymore, thank you.
How are Hwy 14 and 825 for us? In the past has stuck pretty much on the 550 but have some time so looking for new ventures.
Thanks. - joe_b_Explorer IIBus skipper, great photos. Love the sharpness, and the color you are getting in your photography. On the photo with the S turn, just below the Idaroda mine, this is looking north for those not familiar with the road, just a bit farther north is the intersection with Ouray County road 14(?) which is a fun , fairly easy Jeep trail type road. Several old mines back that way with lots of photo opportunities available. It comes out south of here at the top of Red Mountain Pass. The Brooklyn Mine and others are back on that road, some of the best high meadows , with wild flowers, in mid to late summer to be found anywhere in the area.
