You'd never guessed that our ancestors settled this country by walking across it with covered wagons and on horseback without GPS, Rand McNalley, RV.net etc etc...ARE we really related to them? LOL
Surely you're kidding. Walk??? No Maps??? No GPS??? - Dog_FolksExplorerUnlike others that would like to drive these roads, I am deleting the subscription to this thread as the pictures alone are giving me the "willies."
Call me a wimp if you want, but you will never find me driving on this type of road, on purpose. - slickest1ExplorerThe mention of Ice Road Truckers kind of flavours the whole post. Those guys are so ridiculous it makes me and others who have trucked in those conditions laugh. The same goes for the TV show Highway though Hell. The Coquihalla Highway in BC. I worked there hauling logs out of there when they built it in 1985ish.
Several winters after that we hauled logs across it daily without incident in all kinds of weather. The new drivers of this day can't do it without catastrophe for the tv crews.
The I 10 out of Phoenix, really! - BusskipperExplorerSuggest you not tow on this road.
But for a great drive in the Toad or truck, this makes me smile.
:)
B: B: - BusskipperExplorerThese two are the same just someone pulled the first one to look easy.
Actually this one is Wider but with really nice sweeping turns on 550. - BusskipperExplorerHere you go a road at 10,000 feet and no Guard Rails. (just outside Leadville)
Let's practice here and leave me on 550, Really not that hard.

Sorry, NOTHING compares to the traffic, roads and idiots around Boston!
True! Its not that bad if you happen to speak the language there though!! Not many outside the area speak Bostonian. - LaurenExplorerThank you, joe b, you made the point so well. And speak from experience. Your second pic makes it so clear as to the dangers. Even with no traffic one would have to be over the center line to make sure their rear or trailer wheels don't go over the edge. Maybe the ones who say it is not an issue are, at times, those driving down the middle of the road! :-)
We will be in Ouray for a week this Fall and I will be driving this with the one ton Chebby; but the 5er will be at the KOA. Beautiful Fall scenery to see and photograph. - cruiserjsExplorer

Highway 2 in Montana goes nowhere near Butte or Three Forks. Since it's not far from the Canadian border it' s a real challenge in winter.2lazy4U wrote:
I just shake my head at the sensationalism used to get a few clicks. I've never been on the SC one, but the rest aren't bad. The freeway between Butte and Three Forks? Give me a break.
I take it neither of you have heard of Montana-2, either that or you can't read a map.
Few people, other then locals (I used to live there) have ever taken Montana-2. Even then you need a reason. I-90 is a much better road.
The only real issue is the distance for medical aid, and that most of it certainly doesn't have cell-phone coverage.
I took Montana-2 for fun one time, it's really not a bad road, but for 99.999% of the folk; I-90 is the better choice.
BUT the author does NOT say MT 2 so we are free to read US 2!! That being said many States/Provinces have local roads that might ne interpreted as "dangerous" to some!!
The whole exercise is a futile waste of readers' time!! - VeebyesExplorer IIWant dangerous? Try the Washington Beltway at vitually anytime. Could name quite a few other cities that are no better.
Done 3, possibly 4 of the 5 listed. No problems. I don't worry about the roads. I worry about other drivers on the roads who are always so eager to shave a second or two off their travel time.
