64 74 along Ocoee

We last traveled this route heading to Chattanooga and ultimately Desoto State Park in Al about 3 years ago. At the time we were towing a 24ft TT. We now have a 31ft so we total about 50 ft. and a bit concerned about some of the curves and narrow lanes. We will be heading out of Smokemont and I'm not sure if there are any alternate routes that should be considered.
  • We pull our 51 ft rig down this road at least twice a year. As others have said, the curves have been widened and it is much better now.

Other than watching out for 18 wheelers, I try to concentrate on enough swing in the curves to prevent the trailer wheels from dropping off the pavement on the river side.

You didn't ask, but I strongly suggest you plan to hit Chattanooga between 9Am and 3PM on a weekeday or winter weekend. We have had bad luck the last 2 trips and ended up dropping down thru Georgia to avoid camping on the interstate.
  • US-64/US-74 is quite doable at your length. But with the curves and lack of shoulders it is a bit intimidating. The best alternate route to me is to just west of Murphy NC going south on NC-60/ GA-60 spur to US-76, adds about 20 miles to Chattanooga. This is my route of choice during the summer Ocoee rafting season.
  • Just watch for log trucks, especially when they are in a big hurry in the late afternoon. Otherwise take your time and enjoy the scenery.

Even before the rock slide that closed it several years ago, I used it without problems. While it was closed, they blasted several of the bad curves making them MUCH better... no longer 20 mph. Now I do not need to blow the horn in the hopes a louder one does not blows back. No there are not any good alternatives and plenty of 18 wheelers use it... pull over when possible to let them by.
