In the last 5 years, we have made 3 trips pulling a small travel trailer from Hattiesburg, MS to Alaska. The first trip was a learning experience, The second was much better and this summer was really good. We love the people and the way they are so accepting of us. We tend go on the cheap, boondocking when possible and staying in state and provincial campgrounds. The one private campground that we really like was in Valdez. We had intended to stay three nights and ended up staying seven. Valdez is our favorite town. I also like Hyder, staying at Run-A-Muck campground. The host was so friendly and helpful. Once again, we planned on staying 1-2 nights and ended up staying 4.
We are distance runners so all 3 trips, we made sure we were in Seward for Mt Marathon (no, we did not do the race), we just like watching and we especially like the July 4 small town celebration.
We did not particularly like Skagway with all the cruise ships. Many people praise Haines. On our first trip we were there for two nights after we had sold our trailer and then took the ferry to Prince Rupert. This year, we did not go to Haines because our timing was off and we would have been there while the fair was going on. I don't like crowds. We need to go back so we can discover why so many people praise Haines.
I'd like to return in 2015, but my husband wants to go up the east coast of the US and into Eastern Canada. We have been not ever been to the Outer Banks of the US nor to PEI in Canada.
I think the key to really enjoying Canada and Alaska is to take your time and let the weather and your own discoveries determine the length of your stays. We all have different interests (I have no desire to fish) so it is very difficult to tell another person what they should do and where they should go. That's why we keep going back---the discover something new and return to those places that we liked on previous trips.
A regret that I have is that we did not start going in the summers immediately after I retired in 1999. At age 70 and 72, we hope to have some more good years, but there are some things that we are not able to do or to do in the fashion that we would like.
I suggest that a person should go as soon as possible and stay as long as possible. There is so much to see and do and if you go when you are younger, you may find that you want to return and you will have more years in which to do that.
