docj has an excellent alternative. Leave the truck in Port Angeles and walk on, there is a lot to do and see in Victoria. Rather than the ferry trip across Puget Sound, you could take 101 north from Olympia. There is no way around it, getting on and off the island is darn expensive. We would have to spend at least a week there to justify the cost. You can thank fuel costs and our wonderfully efficient provincial government who own the ferries.
