I have lived most of my life on Vancouver Island and I find the ferry fares outrageous. I just won't take an RV back and forth on the expensive ferries. I am going to purchase another RV soon but will keep it on the mainland in storage or store it in the US where we will spend winters. I can fly to Mexico for the cost of getting an RV off and on "The Rock".
I would not recommend going on the Tsawwassen to Victoria trip for one day. The ferry lands in Saanich which is about 1/2 hour if traffic is busy to get to downtown Victoria. A better option would be the US ferry to Vicoria which lands downtown. This is assuming you walk on the ferry. If you drive, then a trip to Butchart Gardens is a must see. At night they have a great fireworks display and it is about half way between the Saanich Ferry terminal (Called Swartz Bay) and Victoria. There are some spectacular camping spots on Vancouver Island and even one in downtown Victoria called West Bay. At the time of year you are planning on visiting, reservations in camp grounds will be necessary.
