Advise on Traveling to Nova Scotia from the Maine Area?

Once in the NE section of the US what are any suggestions to visit the area of Nova Scotia? We have a Class A Fleetwood Storm, 28 ft and towing a small KIA Soul. Any roads I should take that you can recommend? What about further north of that area? Taking 2 small dogs with all their papers. Must see in Nova Scotia? Places to eat? Other towns to see in that area? Good campgrounds to stay in? Roads will accept my 28 footer without any problems?

  • Sheesh, it is Canada, not some third world country!!! The roads are fine. They even have big trucks running around here. Only road complaint so far are the potholes. Seen some big enough to swallow a Smartcar. Maybe it was a tough winter. In any case the roads are no worse the what is the norm for NE US.
  • When we did the Cabot Trail, we stayed at the Baddeck Cabot Trail Campground and did day trips to Louisbourg Museum and the Cabot Trail. In Baddeck is the Alexander Graham Bell Museum which is really interesting.

There are so many things to see. We are heading to PEI and Nova Scotia again this year. Our plan is to take the Confederation Bridge to PEI and then take the Ferry from Wood Island to Nova Scotia. This will be our third trip to PEI and Nova Scotia. Lunenburg and Peggy's Cove are cool places to visit.

On the way back to the states, we will stay at New River Beach Provincial Park in New Brunswick. It is on the Bay of Fundy with the huge tidal range.I made reservations last week. We had planned to take the Ferry from Digby NS to St. John NB but the cost was a little too high so we decided that we would drive around. Once back in the states, we stay at the Pumpkin Patch CG in Hermon Maine.

Hope this has been a little help. If you have any questions about other places to visit, PM me.

  • Cape Breton Island was a highlight for us. We drove the scenic Cabot Trail and spent a night on the west side (great sunset views) plus a night at Dingwall's Hideaway Campground & Oyster Market around the tip. Steep coming down the east side, though. Some prefer to park the RV at Baddeck and drive the Trail by car.

We found one day to be sufficient at the Fortress of Louisbourg, but arrive when they open. If you have a Parks Canada annual pass, show that and you'll be waved past the ticket lines. In addition to the Fortress, the lighthouse is worth a visit. Several campgrounds in town to choose from.

A good campground for visiting Halifax is Shubie Park in Dartmouth just across the bridge. Many interesting sights - We spent several hours in the Citadel at the top of the hill to watch the daily firing of the noon gun, see marching bands, tour the fort, and see the excellent military museum. The Maritime Museum on the waterfront tells the story of the disastrous explosion in the city's harbor and has a moving exhibit on the Titanic sinking. We also visited the cemetery where many Titanic victims were laid to rest.
  • Yes, CC you've named just a few.

Cape Breton, top of that island, Meat Cove. What is outside the Cape Breton Highlands National Park is far more pleasing, IMHO, than that in it. Cgs in that park are far tooooooooooo squish.

Give yourself something like 2 1/2 days for Fortress Louisbourg, there are many things to try to take in carefully in that rebuilt town/fortress. Different types of eateries of the historical era, ie. the ordinary for the labourer, and the the more posh for the officers. Still you can dress as casual as you like for either.

Getting there: drive by road or ferry across to Yarmouth. IMHO drive. But you might want to drive from Lubec, ME to Campobello Is, then boat to Deer Is., NB, and on to Grand Manan, NB before going across to the mainland of NB. Of course, you miss Calais, ME and St. Stephen, NB going that route. Maybe go up one way and come back another.

NB Mactaquac, Acadienne Historical Village, Kings Landing, Hartland Covered Bridge (longest covered bridge on the blue planet), Saint John City Market....

NS mainland, Historic Properties, Halifax, Ovens, Yarmouth Museum, 5 Islands Prov. Park.....

PEI: take ferry to, leave by Bridge - pay on leaving, bridge costs less. BEST LOBSTER meal in all Atlantic Canada (meaning NL too), New Glasgow Lobster Suppers, Orwell Corner living history village, Sir Andrew MacPhail Estate (tea room), Charlottetown Farmer's Market go with empty fridge and empty tummies, and crafts. & beaches if you like.

  • New Brunswick - Reversing Falls, Saint John, Fundy National Park, Bay of Fundy, Hopewell Rocks, Magnetic Hill. Shediac.

Nova Scotia - Peggy's Cove, Lunenberg, Halifax (many sites), Cape Breton, Cabot Trail, Alexander Graham Bell Museum, Fortress at Louisburg.

This touches on just a few of the most popular sites... So many beautiful things to do and see!

Main highways and most campsites will accommodate your rig...
