Air quality in the southwest?

Not sure what the best forum to post this question in was...

How is the air quality in Utah / Arizona right now? Last I was there (May 2010) it was very smoggy from fires in California. The night time sky was always glowing from all the dust and smoke, even waaaay out in the boonies away from just about everything. During the day, there were blue skies, but they were pastel rather than a deep azure - the dust and smoke hung high like some sort of fog.

  • The Casa Grande area and south Phoenix will be the dustiest and they get the huge dust storms. However, it doesn't happen every day, for sure.

Just depends where you're going. Arizona has lucked out this year and no huge fires like California has had.

Clear areas right now would be north Arizona - Flagstaff area; south around Tucson, Green Valley, Benson and east in the White Mtns. of Show Low and Pinetop.

We stay away from the Casa Grande area any time of the year. We've been caught in two serious dust storms in December and February.
  • Depends on where you are. We are South of Tucson and rarely if ever have bad air quality as the breeze/wind comes off the Sea of Cortez (from the SW). We don't get the dust storms of Central AZ. This is true all year long!

  • Just drove from So Cal to Salt Lake City two days ago. Excellent air quality all the way
  • Basically same as always. Right now is rainy (monsoon) season so the skies have been pretty clear most dust dirt washed out.
  • Don't know...but this was on our local Seattle news 2 days ago..
    Dust storm in Phoenix.
