I prefer to start with a road map to get an overall idea of the major roads, options, etc. Then I'll look on Google maps/earth for more details. Then if something looks iffy or there are some options I'll search on here.
For instance---I found out that one route across the Bighorns is pretty dicey with a trailer, the other much better. There was no obvious difference from any other source.
There are also details of routes that only locals know. Recently there were several questions about routes around/through Nashville & TN from snowbirds headed south. Myself and a few others were able to answer those with info not obvious from any map or GPS.
One thing people neglect to do is check state DOT sites. You can usually get info about construction and closures there. Tennessee has one of the best ones, updated realtime with traffic incident info.
