Yeah, this is something I noticed right away. With google maps and the GPS etc, you put in a destination and you get a route. The "map" is maybe a couple of miles wide either side of the route. The more you zoom out the less detail you get. You can drive right by a bunch of interesting stuff and never know it.
With paper maps and a highlighter, you get the big picture. I like to start there.
