Alternate route to Castaic, CA

We are currently in Palm Springs, CA and moving up to Castaic soon. We are looking for an alternate route to avoid as much LA traffic as possible. We are considering 1-10, 215, 15, 138 to Palmdale then 14 to 1-5. Has anybody done this route recently? We know it is hilly but if roads are good, that is okay. We will be pulling a 34 ft 5er.
Thank you!

Time your trip on 1-10, 215 to I-5 so you avoid early morning workers traffic and afternoon workers going home. 7:00 to 10:10am and 4:00 to 6:00pm.
  • We take the 138 all the time coming back from Las Vegas. Good mostly 2 lane road, but it too can be congested. Take anything to the 210 west, as you get to Pasadena get in the right lane around Hill street exit and continue on the 210 west. If you miss this split just stay on the freeway a couple of exits to the 2 North, and take it to the 210. The 210 will merge with the 5 in San Fernando, and take the 5 North to Castaic. You will hit a few miles of heavy congestion at the 5-14 split, it is almost unavoidable, but once over the hill an in the Valencia area the traffic opens up. Happy Trails.
  • Check the traffic flow maps. That's really the only way to know what traffic is like at the time YOU'LL be there. I remember heading to Dockweiler beach at 3pm on a weekday. Most people would say that's nuts, and it is if you don't check traffic first.
  • My daughter lives in Castaic. I always try to take the 138 and 14. If you take the 10 to the 5 you could hit big traffic on the 10 and the 5 through Burbank and the rest of the San Fernando valley can be pretty bad.

This^^^. Good road and much less chance of getting stuck in traffic.

    Safe travels.
