Do Canadian grocery stores, gas stations, etc. accept american dollars?
If so, do they charge a fee or are they happy to get the US dollars that are worth more?
My US credit card will bill me at the current exchange rate, but then add a 3% foreign transaction fee. Works out to about $1.02 US for every $1.00 CA put on the credit card.
While it's not huge, if I can save 2% by paying for gas and groceries with my US cash it will add up for a 4-6 week, 2000 mi trip.
I'm the OP and thanks to everyone for the information provided. My questions have been answered many times over. I'm crossing the border tomorrow morning with friends who used to live in Canada. They said several weeks ago while still at home that there was no need to get Canadian $'s because US $'s would be accepted everywhere $ for $ and they would save all the exchange rate charges I would be paying by converting my US $ into CA $. I strongly doubted it, but wanted confirmation. As stated in the OP, if I could save 2% for all my gas and groceries it would be worthwhile to just bring more cash with me when I crossed.
Thanks for your verification that I was right and my friends were wrong.
