BTW your friends are partly right, SOME merchants take US, but give change in CN (and had a few of them even discount the US for the exchange rates). I know, just got back 2 weeks ago.

Don't know where you live but I filled up at Mr Gas in North Bay On about 4 days back. No pre-payment .... Visa was just fine. Most of our end of Canada is like that. Big cities ... maybe not!
