April trip

Plan on taking a week Plus trip during April vacation week .( we are both teachers ) Probably heading south to the Carolinas depending on average temps. The DW definitely wants it warm!!!!! Spent a week in Myrtle beach last year during the summer and loved it. How is the western North and South Carolina during April?

  • What do you expect to do on your vacation? April in Myrtle Beach, we would be out in jeans and windbreakers, sweaters underneath. Canadians would be starting to come down to swim in the ocean, golfers to play.

Further inland on the coastal plain, sunny days would be warmer than at the coast, cold dank days cooler. Quite changable, feeling like late winter, spring, or early summer, day to day.

I was also in D.C., March and April. Glorious warm sunny days, cold dank reprises of winter, weather systems coming through weekly.

If the Gulf Stream is where it is supposed to be, coastal Virginia, on the peninsula, will consistently have some of the nicest weather north of Charleston at that time of year. It is often more mild in January-March than most places further south. But this is a coastal effect, weather may not be the same inland. And a system blowing cold air off the continent can give you brisk days.

Spring breaks from eastern Pennsylvaniia, through easten Virginia, coastal Carolinas, some have been cold, some cool, some wet, some warm and sunny. It is spring, weather is changeable.

Hope for nice, but no guarantees.
  • We went to Charleston during fall break last year. We had not been there since Jan.'71. I was in the Air Force then. WOW what a big change. We had forgotten how much damage Hugo did. Weather was great.
  • Last year, we went to Charleston for spring break. It was the last week of March and the weather was good. Not really get in the water and enjoy the ocean good, but it was in the high 60's and low 70's.

We stayed at James Island County Park, which is great.

For warm. You want the coast. In the Northern NC mountains it can still be quite cold. It would be a little warmer in the Southern NC Mountains around Cherokee. But still iffy.

Try the OBX, TopSail island, Wilmington, or Myrtle. Will be much warmer there. But not hot.
  • Western North Carolina, while quite nice, will be in the mountains, or at least higher elevations, and not warm during April. In fact, snow has been seen in the highest elevations in April. A lot of Upstate South Carolina will not be very warm, either, but you could reasonably expect sunny days with warm sunshine, but not warm enough to leave a jacket behind, and cool nights often needing the use of a heater to "knock the chill off."
