Are we too long to enter Canada?

I cannot find any official information to address this. We begin our trip on June 15th. We are pulling a 5th wheel toy hauler that is 42 feet long. Our total length should be within the maximum 65.6 feet, but clearly our RV is more than 41 feet.

According to TravelBritishColumbia.com, the "maximum total length for a towed RV is 12.5 meters (41 feet). Maximum overall length is a combination of 20 meters or 65.6 feet."

Does anyone know if we will be ok? I know we are big, but we are full timers and this is simply "home" to us. Please respond as soon as possible so we can make alternate arrangements if we cannot make this trip.

    That is good to hear, but hoping to find an official answer if anyone knows where to point me. Otherwise, this could hinge on running into that one inspector having a bad day.

    (bclaws.ca)
    Vehicle length
    7.08 (1) Subject to subsections (2) to (5), a person must not drive or operate a vehicle or vehicle combination unless it conforms to the vehicle dimensions specified for that vehicle or vehicle combination in Appendix B, C, D, E, F, G, H or I to these regulations.

    (2) A vehicle's overall length is to be determined for the purposes of subsection (1) without including the following as part of that length:
    (a) an air deflector, heater or refrigerator unit attached to the front of the vehicle;
    (b) the draw bar of a full trailer if the draw bar articulates in the horizontal plane relative to the main load-carrying structural component of the trailer;
    (c) auxiliary equipment or devices that are not designed or used to carry cargo and do not extend more than 30 cm beyond the front or 10 cm beyond the rear of the vehicle, including, but not limited to, air connectors, electrical connectors, hydraulic connectors, rollers, pickup plates, bumpers, ladders, glad hands, load securement devices or dangerous goods placards;
    (d) a platform mounted on the front upper portion of a trailer to a maximum horizontal length of 1 m, if the platform is used exclusively to assist in the installation or securing or both of load securement devices;
    (e) an aerodynamic device installed at the rear of the truck, trailer or semi-trailer if
    (i) any portion of the device more than 1.9 m above the ground does not protrude more than 0.61 m beyond the rear of the vehicle,
    (ii) any portion of the device within 1.9 m of the ground does not protrude more than 0.305 m beyond the rear of the vehicle, and
    (iii) the aerodynamic device is not designed or used to carry cargo.

    So, if there is a hassle at the border get a over length permit.

    A tip for crossing the border:
    hand the border guard, your pass ports, dog's rabies certificate, your gun import license, ($25each) if needed. then shut up.
    answer their questions quickly and don't babble.
    Where is home-- tell them
    Where are you going in Canada tell them you are transiting to Alaska.
    Do you have any firearms with you? (they will not ask this question when they are already holding your request to import a weapon. they will simply tell you to park in the inspection area, and come inside to register the weapon and pay the required $25 bucks.
    Do not editorialize, or make statements that are not relevant. they don't want to hear it. that just takes up time and there will be people behind you.

  • The custom agents don't enforce motor vehicle regs - the weigh scales will though. Also at the safety checks that are set up randomly throughout B.C. Every vehicle is stopped and subject to a safety and paperwork check - they check for overweight vehicles too.

    Been there, done that ... at one stop our paperwork wasn't in order for the trailer insurance. We had done our part but apparently the trailer was still registered to a previous owner in Alberta because the paperwork for the transfers wasn't completed correctly a few owners back. We had to park the trailer until the paperwork was sorted out and in order.

    At another safety check, I was told one of the running lights on the trailer was burned out, but they let me go without penalty. They checked everything thoroughly to make sure the trailer was loaded correctly and within the tow limits of the truck.

    You probably will get a bunch of different information here.

    Maybe someone here has a good contact point...

    ADDED NOTE I just realized you have asked this same question twice...

    Yeah, I did, but it appeared my first post was there, then gone, so I reposted.

    ..

    ...and if you are really lucky, some of it might even be accurate.
  • I just did a search for the biggest and best available just outside Vancouver. The Redwood 39FL is 41' 10" in total length.

    I do not think you need to worry.
