Arizona - easiest place to return vehicle permit?

We acquired a ten year RV permit in Dec. 2005.

We are traveling to New Mexico & Arizona this month and thought it would be best to turn it in now. I'll just drive over and back - this is all I will do in Mexico (actually I'd prefer to leave the RV in the US rather than drive it over).

Is there a crossing where this is easier?
Can I walk the sticker/paperwork over?
Otherwise I'll leave my wife, dog and prohibited foodstuffs/dog food on the US side while I drive over to return the sticker.

  • He is correct about the passport number. Here is a link to a site that will show what is on your passport number: https://portalsat.plataforma.sat.gob.mx/aduanas_cpitv_internet/index.aspx

If you enter at Lukeville/Sonoyita, it's a LONG way to the place south of Caborca where you turn in your permit.
  • And if you have to renew your passport the tracking of the 10 year permit will be lost in Mexico's system. The 10 year permit is issued on your passport # and in USA (don't know in Canada) when you renew your passport it will have a new #. Therefore you can get another 10 year permit should you want to return to Mexico later in a different RV. Of course maybe someday this little loophole may close. I would go to briansue's location if possible. Nogales is a PITA to cross & return.

And from Nogales, its about 21 Km south of the border crossing.

thanks - except for Nogales crossing, can I expect the return banjercitos to be right at the border? I found lists online of crossings that can handle permits - & noticed that Nogales was the only one noted as " at km 21".

we love Mexico and I certainly hope to do more trips there in the future - just not before this current import permit expires.

  • As far as I know the officials at the MX border have to be the ones to remove the sticker - they have to see the vehicle and see the sticker on the vehicle and see the sticker come off. Reason being - anyone could take the sticker off and return it but leave the vehicle somewhere in MX. I have heard of people doing it by returning just the sticker but it is a real hassle of paperwork.

Depends on what part of NM and AZ you will be in. Way over south of Deming, NM we have crossed at Columbus/Palomas where the officials are right at the border - within a few feet - and there is a large parking area on the US side. You could walk to the office and ask them there. Be aware that even though it is only a few feet you still have to return through US customs and have your passport. There is no easy place to park an RV on the MX side but it can be done. We used to cross there to go to dentist and eye glass place - and when fuel was still cheap we would drive 3 blocks to the Pemex to fuel up and then just turn around and return to the US. We talked to the US officials first to make sure what we were doing was OK with them. Now fuel is cheaper in the US so no point to that idea.
