Astor, Fl to Clewiston, Fl

Travelling 12/18 from Astor to Clewiston. GPS route suggests I-4 through Orlando and pick up Fl turnpike to US 441 south. Would like to avoid Orlando traffic and tolls if possible. Comments, suggestions please.
  • If you do come through Orlando, don't bother with the Turnpike. (Prices are outrageous, but that is a different rant.) Also, don't take the so=called East bypass which takes off near Sanford. SR-417 (toll). Out of the way; lots of tolls; doesn't save any time or trouble.

I-4 has a direct exit onto US-441 South BEFORE you get to the Turnpike exit.

From the North, your best bet for traffic is late night. Other than that, try to hit town after 9:30 and before 4:00.

Pick up US-27 near Lake Wales.
  • Thanks to all who posted. Wanderingbob, Home is St. Augustine, my FW is set up in Astor where I like to play with the crappie and bass on the St. Johns. Heading to Okeechobee to soak some shiners for a trophy bass. Just living the retirement dream.
  • SR 40 west to SR 19, head south through Eustis and Tavares to US 27 northwest of Clermont and go south on US 27 all the way to Clewiston. It'll work if you're not in a hurry; I went north this way a couple or years ago.

Logically though, I'd join I-4 where convenient, take SR 417 around Orlando and head south on US 27 on the southwest side of town. Go through around noon and you should be fine.
  • DO NOT go down 441 to Clewiston! 441 down the east side of the lake is not fit for man nor beast. IMHO. US 27 is much much better road. I don't see how you can avoid Orlando, Ocala is not a good option. I'd stay on I-4 through Orlando to US 27 and then it's an easy drive down to Clewiston. I just came-up that way a few weeks ago. US 441 is ok until you get south of Okeechobee, and from there south it's a nightmare, at least it was the last (and only) time I went that way. Pahokee is the pits. The time I went through there, (I wanted to check-out the campground in Pahokee) I was pulling a 5th wheel and my wife was following in the car, she called on the cellphone and asked, "Where have you taken me?" It was slow, twisty, windy, bumpy, and narrow, and parts were fairly congested. I wouldn't recommend that route to anyone. JMHO

US 27 while shorter, it will be very slow... lots of stop and go. I would go to Sanford and then 46 to I-95 to Ft Pierce and then 70 to the lake.
  • It's hard to avoid Orlando when Astor is due north of the city. You could go west and pick up 441 in Ocala but that makes sense only if your time is not that important to you. The I-4->FTP->441 route really looks like the most direct way, the FHP section is short and the toll should be minimal. We ran all the way down the FHP from I-75 to where it ends in Homestead on the way to Marathon Key and the tolls weren't that much and we were towing our fiver. The time and distance saved made it worth while to us.

US27 used to be a good route south of Orlando but the Sebring area buildup ruined that path.
