BUT....the incoming rush 10-15 miles out (or more) actually starts about that time.

Not even close.

When 85 was closed I hit south Atlanta at 8PM and 30 minutes later I was a I-575/Marietta/30 miles...no reason to arrive at midnight. Once past downtown I-75 uses the right hand lanes unless you are in the HOV which exits from the left lane.

X2 ^^. The loop is MUCH worse. We pull straight through (two to three times a year).

I live in an Atlanta suburb so have to do this a lot. I agree with others who recommend that staying on 75 through town is easier than taking the bypasses. Just don't drive in the right two lanes - you can be caught in an exit-only lane in a few places, notably near the old baseball stadium and I-20 interchange as you approach downtown.

Try to plan to be here in mid day - after 10-10:30 AM and before 3:00 PM if passing through in the daytime. Rush hour stays late in the morning and starts early in the afternoon!

X2 going straight through. The bypasses are insane-some seriously dangerous drivers on the Atlanta bypasses. And yes, don't be there anywhere near the rush hours.

I once planned to bypass Atlanta by way of two lane roads, (not the interstate bypasses) but missed my turn. Ended up going straight through, and it took about a half hour more than it takes to use the interstate bypasses, but it was so much less stressful. The traffic was thick but moved along nicely at about 35-40. Too much traffic for the idiots to create too much of a problem. I always just go straight through now.

Not a lot of change in Atlanta traffic. Back to mostly normal now that the I-85 fiasco has been repaired. Each to his own, but 285 can be more dangerous and/or aggravating than going straight through. Lanes are narrower and speeds great, not to mention the trucks.
I might just stay on I-75 and go straight through, paying attention to the signs when you get on the 75/85 'Downtown Connector'. When 75 northbound bears slightly to west you will be OK until you get past 285. It gets a little heavier because of the new baseball stadium and the construction going on with the dual use roadway being built. Saying all that to say, pick a time between 10 and 2 during the day or after midnight at night and head through. You will be fine. Thousands do it every day

I always go straight through and stay out of the right lane as there are several exits with two lanes exiting without much notice. I use the HOV lane but you need to be willing to hammer down as you speed up when you get to Atlanta.
