Has anyone mentioned the Corn Palace in Mitchell, SD? Our x-country family camping trip in 1964 hit that. It is pretty much the first place I remember. We left from the Phila suburbs, out the Turnpike, then up to Oberlin College, across I-94 in Michigan, then Wisconsin Dells, Albert Lea State Park in MN, and finally into South Dakota. Wall Drug, the Badlands, and then WY and YP, the Tetons, Idaho, Bend, OR for service on the VW bus, down the coast highway to SF, Santa Barbara, Los Angeles, Disneyland, Las Vegas, Hoover, Grand Canyon, Mesa Verde, and then a mad dash across Kansas, Missouri, and eastward to get home in time for school to start.
Even after 50 years I remember certain aspects of it very well. I was 11, and we spent every night but one in tents.
