Attractions between NJ and Yellowstone

My wife and I are first time RV'ers driving from NJ to Yellowstone with 2 kids (11 & 9) this August. What are some of the attractions not to be missed along the way? We're thinking of doing day stops and/or 1 or 2 nights at a campground in between.

Any suggestions?
  • With kids that age, you might want to stop at one of the State Fairs for a day along the way. The Indiana State Fair is August 7-23. Illinois is August 13-23. Iowa is August 13-23. Nebraska is August 28- September 7.

Depending on your route, there is the The Great Platte River Road Archway Museum and Fort Kearny State Park along I-80 in Nebraska. There are a number of other museums and things to do in Kearny that could make a day or two stop including a Cabela's. The original Cabela's in Sidney, NE has a campground.

If you do go to South Dakota, Devils Tower and the Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monuments are potential stops along the way to Yellowstone.

If you go through Thermopolis, WY; there is the Dinosaur Museum, Hot Springs State Park and Legend Rock Petroglyph Site.

Cody, WY has the Buffalo Bill Center Museum Complex, Old Trail Town and nightly rodeo.

In Yellowstone, the kids might like the Chuckwagon Cookout.

Hope you have a Great Trip!!
  • x2 on the Badlands. I very much enjoyed some time there on a family camping trip when I was roughly as old as your kids.

I also recommend the St. Louis City Museum if your kids enjoy exploring/climbing sorts of things. It's strange and not entirely museum-like, more a giant jungle gym and art project all smushed together. People seem to either love it or hate it; there's not much middle ground. (This is, of course, the "day trip/day stop" category, not the "campground" category!)
  • Pangaea Ron, looking forward to seeing this special place. Thanks!
  • CloudDriver, thanks for the information... Badlands was on my list, but before that where did you guys stop over on the way? Did you stay at a campground? Or did you just use the rest stops along the way? Since we've never driven this road before want to make sure it's safe traveling with 2 young kids.
  • We have RV'ed from NJ to Yellowstone 5 times in the past 10 years. IMO there is nothing much to see until you get to South Dakota's Badlands National Park. In August it will be hot there. Lots to see in the Black Hills area but make sure you are not there around the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally August 3-9th as everything will be booked for miles around.

Do not miss Grand Teton National Park only 40 miles south of Yellowstone. Some of the most beautiful mountain scenery in the country. The entrance fee for Yellowstone gets you into Grand Teton as well.
  • We were at Mammoth Hot Springs in Yellowstone NP, and a tour bus with tourists from NJ arrived. As we were walking on the boardwalks alongside the multi-colored pools, one of the guys from NJ said: I don't know what the big deal is, we have streams that color everywhere in NJ. It was truly funny.

Enjoy your trip, it will be amazing. I've done YNP more that 25 times over the last 60 years, and we keep coming back. It is a special part of America.
